Story
The city of Bulikov once wielded the powers of the gods to conquer the world, enslaving and brutalizing millions - until its divine protectors were killed. Now Bulikov has become just another colonial outpost of the world's new geopolitical power, but the surreal landscape of the city itself - first shaped, now shattered, by the thousands of miracles its guardians once worked upon it - stands as a constant, haunting reminder of its former supremacy. Into this broken city steps Shara Thivani.

This is one of the recorded books I return to every once-in-a-while to enjoy all over again. It’s original, well-told and clever with great characters. The concept intrigues me every time, as I experience the story from a different moment in history. It ALWAYS leaves me thinking. Never fails.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

It’s Just Good - As Good as They Say It Is

Oh, yeah. A standout of a book, it is it’s own little superbly done thing. A few pronunciation hiccups, don’t let them bother you. Bless Bonnie Garmus for doing something that most people would say could not possibly work. When I finished listening, I was so startled I had to listen to the whole thing again. It might happen to you, too. Enjoy. Appreciate. Think on it.

When Edward Enninful became the first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue, few in the world of fashion wanted to confront how it failed to represent the world we live in. But Edward, a champion of inclusion throughout his life, rapidly changed that. Now, whether it’s putting first responders, octogenarians or civil rights activists on the cover of Vogue, or championing designers and photographers of colour, Edward Enninful has cemented his status as one of his world’s most important changemakers.

Story
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Kind of Amazing
Reviewed: 09-18-22
This book is not your ordinary ‘we’ve been here’ experience. It has elements of real and elements of rough that make it gently profound and quite unusual. Once I began I had to prioritize listening to it until it was done. It did give me the ‘journey through another life’ experience I prize in a really good story. I recommend it for music lovers, those who appreciate a mystery, those who like to read about striving and those who value a deeper understanding of this world. Don’t miss the author’s note at the end.

More Than One Kind of Great

Storytelling— oh my goodness. Once I started I couldn’t leave it alone. It’s nice and long, though, so it really gave the sense of an encounter with a book. I appreciated the voice actors, especially Shadow and Laura. Very thought-provoking concept and plot. If you have watched or are watching Sandman on Netflix, you will enjoy adding this to your collection.

Twice Through Was the Charm
Reviewed: 08-17-22
I didn’t fully grasp the nuances of the story until I listened the second time. I ordinarily listen to a new audiobook twice through, but in this instance I really gained a lot from the second listen. This is fun and playful but/and it’s also thoughtful and lovely. Thank you, Julia; I appreciated what you did here.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

It’s serious and humorous. Some of it’s for fun and some of it’s for real. There are things to learn and things to think about. A fictionalized Black community in the middle of almost nowhere, Kansas, is ready to welcome you home. If you allow it, it will inspire you!

Story
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Kingsolver at Her Best

Every few years I return to Prodigal Summer to take me out of myself, and drive me deeper into myself. It’s a story (and sounds - birdsong!) of the natural world, human frailty, imperfect but welcome love and the possibility of understanding more than we do. It makes us laugh, it lectures us, it teases us with the wondrous way things connect with other things. What a book.
