Story
With a new job I didn’t apply for and an extended family I didn’t know I had - midlife has become somewhat problematic. Gluing ghosts back together is easy compared to my new celestial occupation. The Grim Reaper wants to put a ring on it. Tim wants to be a father. Candy Vargo has lost her damn mind, and Jennifer thinks we’re all sparkly vampires. I’ve been given an impossible task with catastrophic consequences for failure, but it wouldn’t be my midlife without another crisis.

I enjoy the series but....
Reviewed: 11-18-24
Overall I have enjoyed this series overall but each book seems a little more "watered down" and they are dragging out the plot that's getting weaker with each book.
On the plus side the author has created characters that I really care about, even the ones I don't like. And wanting to get to know the characters better and see more of their story is what has kept me going even though each book has been a little more disappointing. I love the southern humor and the heart of our main character.
On the negative side the plot line is getting incredibly weak. I've seen other reviews mention repetition, I must echo that complaint. Each new character introduced seems to be just a repeat of an older character. There are so many cliche phrases that at first seemed adorable, charming, or hilarious now evoke extreme eye rolling and making me cringe a bit. The books are getting shorter and definitely not worth a whole credit. Honestly after book 2 there's only been enough true content for one or two more books. I will not purchase any more books in this series unless they are part of a 2 for 1 sale or DRASTICALLY reduced in price. Especially considering the entire first chapter of every book is word for word a repeat of the last chapter of the previous book.

I have avoided this book for a long time because I generally hate Young Adult books. This was an outstanding magical story for all adults young and old. It was just delightful. I am so glad I finally gave this book a chance!

Story
Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

Mixed Feelings.....
Reviewed: 06-03-24
I have such mixed feelings about Son of a Witch. I read all the books in this series years ago and absolutely LOVED them! This book was no exception. The story isn't quite as enthralling as Wicked, but it's still great. I was excited to start The Wicked Years series in audiobook format. After thoroughly enjoying book 1, I was so disappointed with book 2. The narration is honestly pretty terrible. Gregory Maguire is a brilliant author, but he should leave the narration to others. This is not the first audiobook that suffers from using the author as the narrator. The narration is tolerable with the mindset of wanting to continue the series, but be prepared to wince and cringe fairly often.

I found this book by happenstance, what a hidden gem. This was some great storytelling and the narrator did a fantastic job. It has plenty of action without being to battle heavy. The fantasy/magic element is subtle but I'm thrilled to learn more about this world and it's characters. (some lovable and some hateable)

Moving beyond words!
Reviewed: 06-06-23
This is by far (for me) the most moving book about the Holocaust. I've read dozens of accounts but this is an exemplary glance into the inner thoughts of a young man forced into horrific circumstances. It goes beyond just telling about the horror inflicted. It's a poignant look at the human mind while facing pure evil. Hopefully we will never forget what humans are capable of and never allow such atrocities to happen again.

Magic is fading... and the ways of Man are driving the Old Ones to the West, beyond the ken of humankind. The ancient groves are being destroyed, and if nothing is done, Ireland will lose its essential mystic core. The prophecies of long ago have foretold a way to prevent this horror, and it is the Sevenwaters clan that the spirits of Eire look to for salvation. They are a family bound into the lifeblood of the land, and their promise to preserve the magic has been the cause of great joy to them... as well as great sorrow.

Great story, HUGE AUDIO ISSUES!
Reviewed: 04-01-23
As others have mentioned there are SIGNIFICANT issues with the audio playback. I am absolutely hooked on the Sevenwaters Series, and I really like this narrator. The narration is perfectly fine and then suddenly without warning they've patched in a phrase, sentence, or even longer passage that jumps in at 10x's the volume! After the first one I hoped that it was a single occurrence. After the second time I got a little weary, and after a few more I checked the reviews to see if it had been mentioned. The weird and random sections at insanely loud volume happens on and off all the way to the end. It's incredibly jarring. DO NOT listen with headphones or earbuds or you will damage your hearing. If I had known how incredibly frustrating it was I probably would have read this volume instead of listening.

All the feels!!!
Reviewed: 07-22-22
I will start by saying that this is a story for adults. It's quite graphic at times so if you're looking for some lighthearted reading/listening this might not be for you. It makes me sad to see so many negative reviews purely because this book has some adult language and graphic content. I usually expect apocalypse stories to be quite difficult at times.
Now that we have that out of the way I absolutely LOVED this book. It made me laugh until my sides hurt, filled my heart to overflowing at times, and also made me feel incredible loss and despair. Just like life it explored a multitude of human emotions.
Also, I will forever have a new understanding of dogs. The parts of the story from the dog's point of view were outstanding.
I don't want to give away a single spoiler so I will end this here. If you enjoy apocalyptic fiction and are comfortable with adult language and some occasionally graphic content I whole heartedly recommend this book!
