Story
In 2006, Kristi Coulter left her cozy but dull job for a promising new position at the fast-growing Amazon.com, but she never expected the soul-crushing pressure that would come with it. In no time she found the challenge and excitement she'd been craving—along with seven-day workweeks, lifeboat exercises, widespread burnout, and a culture driven largely by fear. But the chase, the visibility, and, let's face it, the stock options proved intoxicating, and so, for twelve years, she stayed—until she no longer recognized the face in the mirror or the mission she'd signed up for.

Spoke to my soul. Kristi is both hilarious and very serious. This book is essential for any Amazonian, whether currently at the company or beyond it. And especially a brilliant read for any woman in Tech.

Master one of our economy’s most rare skills and achieve groundbreaking results with this “exciting” audiobook (Daniel H. Pink) from an “exceptional” author (New York Times Book Review). Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep Work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship.

print version probably a better option

The concepts here were good, but I think the audiobook format, unfortunately, didn’t translate very well. I may need to read this one the traditional way the narration was also distracting. Although the narrator voice was clear, it was kind of comical and hard to take serious almost like an infomercial.

The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of 75 fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from into a unique study of human civilization.

Lovely read (or rather listen) especially for those who are interested in design, color, arts, and above all quirky but relevant history.

Story
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

I like many, have heard the praises for this book throughout my lifetime. Finally now in my 30s I read this book for the first time. And let me tell you, the book was fantastic and deserving of everything I’ve ever heard. Before you Jump-in let me set something straight, this is not a get rich quick book. This is not the five things you need to know and it will solve all your problems book. This is not a complete real estate manual book. This book is something much more powerful, relevant and enduring the test of time. Robert teaches you how to think like an investor, an entrepreneur and overall about money. This is the foundation for which you can build everything else on. I highly recommend to those ready to really “question” the world of money and build their financial education foundation.
