Story
Queensland, Australia, 1936. Sister Claire McAuliffe has been called from Dungarvan, County Waterford, to do God’s work in Jumaaroo, Queensland. Along with four other sisters, she is charged with setting up a Catholic school for the education of the gold rush families. But life between the tropical Australian rainforest and the azure ocean is far from the spectacular paradise it seems. Sister Claire finds life challenging in more ways than she can count, but far more worrying is the constant presence of the much-loved mayor of Jumaaroo, Joseph McGrath.

Wonderful Story!

I've listened to several books by Jean Grainger and love her writing and her stories. This was my favorite so far. The writing was wonderful and so descriptive, and the story definitely was a "page turner". Siobhan Waring's narration was beautiful and brought the story to life. Very enjoyable!

Good story, terrible narration
Reviewed: 07-28-22
The narrator was very inconsistent. She would go from a very loud voice to a whisper. I had to return the book after listening for several hours because I had to adjust the volume every few seconds! It seemed better at the beginning of the book but just kept getting worse. Or maybe it just kept getting more and more annoying.

I loved this book by Linda Collison. It can be hard to find a story that is both original and well told . This was both . The main character was so real with very real thoughts and emotions, and I grew to care very much about her and the other characters . The nautical and medical background of the author was quite apparent and you can tell she really did her homework. The story was gripping , the love stories were very tender, and I can't wait to start on Sugeon's Mate!

Story
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Not worth the time

What disappointed you about The Goldfinch?
I thought the story line and subject matter were dreadful. Too much time was spent describing the most depressing and ugly situations and events.
What was most disappointing about Donna Tartt’s story?
The author is definitely talented, but she goes on and on in gory details about the most unpleasant scenes - uck!
What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He did Russian accents very well, and is a good narrator overall.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Frustration and depression.
Any additional comments?
If I listened one more vomit scene, I was going to scream.
