Great ending
Reviewed: 03-09-24
Promising story and premise but it was hard to get over how… stupid the main character is. She is oblivious to so many obvious things as well as reckless and impulsive, made it hard to root for her at times. BUT. That ending. The last few chapters and especially the very end of the story drags you in… it’s like just when it started to get good, it was over… guess I’ll be going on to book two now!
Narrator was fantastic.

James Marsters, please read all of the audiobooks! I mean like all of them 😉. And while you’re at it, please read them in Spike’s voice… 😉
It was so much fun to listen to the original cast, everyone did a great job. I’m not one for podcasts, I generally prefer audiobooks. But so long as they keep making these with the cast that I love, I will come back and listen. The story was fun and the nostalgia was real! Loved it! And James Marsters is incredible, awesome to hear Spike again!

Men are blinded by Aubri's beauty, charm, and social status. Yet, at 27, no one has succeeded in making her his wife. Starving for adventure, she volunteered for the dangerous work as an Explorer in Old Europe. It's crazy and the mortality rate alone should've made her think twice. But that's the trouble with my friend; she thinks she's immortal. My hardest job right now is protecting her from herself.

New female narrator distracting
Reviewed: 08-29-22
I hate it when long book series suddenly get new narrators. I’d love to say this an exception, but it’s not. The new female narrator is horrible, she makes all the characters sound the same and sounds nothing like the previous narrator, who brought all the characters alive. I am so happy that the same male narrator is there, he continues to do a great job. I’d like to advocate for all of us, please stop switching narrators when it comes to book series. Trust me, we all notice and we all hate it!

Not in the same league...
Reviewed: 06-09-19
I made my way to this series because of A Court of Thorns and Roses... that series is spectacular, very quickly became one of my favorite series ever. So I was excited about this. And it has such great reviews! However... it was meh. It kind of felt like a first draft that should have been edited a few more times.
The main problems I have with it
1. The main character... indeed ALL of the characters... are shallow, 2- dimensional, and not authentic
2. Written poorly... sometimes the narrative shifts characters POV in the same scene back and forth, which just came across as sloppy writing. (like I said, needed more editing)
3. Very poor character development... (surprising considering that was what I loved about Court of Thorns and Roses series)
3. WHY is a world class assassin getting successfully snuck up on all the time?
4. WHY is a captain of the King's guard so horrified by death and for killing someone?
I think it has potential, I will give the next book a try. I think I will need a break and read some unrelated books first. But overall I was very disappointed. Not in the same league as A Court of Thorns and Roses...

A fun, suspenseful, romantic, and well-written novel with a good narrator. Listened to it much too fast, kept finding reasons to listen...better do another load of laundry or dishes :-)
The characters are semi-rip offs of Bones and Booth (especially Bones) from the TV show Bones, but as I love that show, it didn't bother me at all and the story is very different.
Good listen, highly recommend!

I found the characters and the dialogue absolutely horrid. Immature, annoying, stupid dialogue, it was very hard to get past. The characters were silly and shallow most of the time, or suddenly incredibly romantic and out of character. It was just not very well written. Not a favorite of mine.
On the plus side, the 'intimate' scenes were written well....

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Great narration

This was a well told story with two great narrators...which narration makes or breaks the audio-book experience, in my opinion. I liked jumping back and forth between older Jacob and younger Jacob. Just as a warning, there is some animal abuse described in this book... the love story is a bit underdeveloped (you just kind of assume from their limited interactions that they have fallen in love) but all the characters and the lives of people working in a circus were brought to life very well. The story is good just could have used a tiny bit more development between the main two characters but other than that it was great and I enjoyed listening to it!

Lady Minerva Sharpe has the perfect plan to thwart her grandmother’s demands: become engaged to a rogue! Surely Gran would rather release her inheritance than see her wed a scoundrel. And who better to play the part of Minerva’s would-be husband than wild barrister Giles Masters, the very inspiration for the handsome spy in the popular Gothic novels she writes? The memory of his passionate kiss on her nineteenth birthday has lingered in Minerva’s imagination, though she has no intention of really falling for such a rakehell, much less marrying him.

I was just looking for a quick little romance novel... and I know and expect the 'romance' formula so that wasn't what bothered me. For starters, the characters were irritating, especially the female heroine... She just couldn't shut up about her 'books' - which became annoying after awhile, especially since it was promised to her that she could keep writing them.... For another, the first time they experience a little passion, it went too far too fast without any buildup...and then the next time it happened at the pond it lacked any kind of heat ... Next, they get married and she hires someone at her wedding to spy on her husband? Kind of ridiculous, she doesn't even give him a chance to be a husband before she's spying on him... The beginning had promise but it became more annoying as it went along. Not worth a credit in my opinion

Great story, amazing narration
Reviewed: 12-16-09
Beyond the wonderful, gripping, and addicting story and characters that Diana Gabaldon has created is the amazing find of Davina Porter! She is the best narrator I have ever listened to, has great accents and breathes life into each and every character.
The story is great... a bit too graphic in it's violent description of a rape/torture scene at the end of the book... but the rest of the book is too good for that to make me dislike the story entirely. The main characters are very well developed and you find you just have to follow them throughout the series to see what happens to them next...
