Story
Meet Zoe and Greg Milton, a married couple who have let themselves go a bit. Zoe was a stunner in her college days, but the intervening decades have added five stone, and removed most of her self-esteem. Greg's rugby-playing days are well and truly behind him, thanks to countless pints of beer and chicken curry. When Elise, a radio DJ and Zoe's best friend, tells them about a new competition, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn their lives around.

Glad I finally listened!
Reviewed: 04-29-25
I purchased this story on impulse as a Daily Deal but kept putting off listening. I'm so glad that I finally did listen to it. It made me smile, tear up, commiserate, reflect, and LOL several times. The story provides an opportunity to examine our individual and societal views on weight and reality shows. The performance is great with different male and female narrators.
Note--the setting is the UK, so some words and store/brand names may not be familiar to all. Warning--language, and some explicit sex and discussion of body parts. (but not too much. Just 2 married people enjoying the changes in their bodies as they lose weight.)

Story
Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

A bit disappointing
Reviewed: 04-02-25
I enjoy both the Davenport Prey series and Virgil's stories, so I was excited to see them paired up again. However, Lethal Prey has left me feeling meh. I agree with the other reviews that the ending was abrupt and unresolved. What the heck? The characters themselves mention that they're getting older and losing interest in investigative work, and I feel that subdued mood and attitude throughout the story. The guys were never in any danger, never verbally or physically coerced anyone, and they were not directly involved in any action or violence--all departures from what readers have come to expect from the main characters. It was an interesting story, but overall disappointing.

When a badly burned body is found near the remote Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on the west coast of Scotland, it feels like just another day on the job for DCI Jack Logan and his team. But the victim’s list of enemies, including a diminutive loan shark and a powerful local politician, is far longer than Jack was prepared for. And don’t even get him started on the magic psychic sex cult.

Enjoyable, but has an error
Reviewed: 03-15-25
This is another great story of DCI Logan and his team. Not as dark as the last few--good, I needed a break and so did they. But, the author, editor, or someone made a story error. SPOILER IF YOU READ SERIES OUT OF ORDER** In the last book, Dr Rickets is arrested. Yet, in this book, Logan wonders if maybe Rickets has left the office and been sent out to a scene. It really threw me when I heard it.

This item is a great deal as you have both the novellas and the short stories--all the Tom Stranger in one place for one price. Excellent customer service!

Story
Spring is in the air, and lots of things are growing - including the Room 26 family! Signs of spring are very exciting to everyone at Longfellow School. Mrs. Brisbane's class has seen flowers poking out of snow and baby birds hatching, and Just-Joey even brought in tadpoles that are growing into frogs. It also means Family Fun Night is coming up, and all of the students' families are involved in making amazing activities. Humphrey helps in many ways, of course, but he can't stop wondering about his own family.

Story
Gaia is dying. That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth’s death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia.

Letty and Lucas on the case!
Reviewed: 04-11-24
The Prey stories are always good entertainment. I love Lucas, and though I can take Letty if I suspend my rational brain (let's face it--do you know any 25 year old any near as calm, cold, together, etc., and with such a job?) I enjoyed the story and the characters. It's a good reminder/warning of what could happen.
***slight spoiler: for such a genius, the location did seem like a poor choice. And as things progressed, I would have gone to a WalMart or fast food restaurant immediately with my vials, rather than wait. And if you know that the situation is "hot" in New Mexico--why not drive out of state? But, thank goodness for the world, even genius mad scientists make mistakes and the Davenports are very lucky.

If you like Peter Grant stories, you'll probably like this. Interesting characters and bits of history. A fair amount of German dialogue, which almost affected my ability to follow some conversations. The story wasn't a great "mystery"--they mostly stumbled around--they didn't solve anything
