Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Fantastic story and reader

This beautifully written intergenerational story wove together interesting cultural, medical and historical information in a tale that held my attention for all thirty something hours. The author is not only a talented writer but also a superb reader.

Wonderfully poetic
Reviewed: 12-30-21
I bought this book a year ago and couldn’t seem to find consistent time to dedicate to reading it to keep the pace. When I saw it on audible I decided to give it a try and am so glad I did. The book is uniquely written, taking up the theme of “lost” in ways both personal and historical. I enjoyed listening to Solnit’s reading, her performance adds to the poetry. Definitely recommend for readers/listeners open to something deep and different.
