Slow, with little to keep the reader engaged.
Reviewed: 03-02-25
Maybe it was the narration, which was bad (sometimes wondered if it was AI?), but it was just a slow story, and eventually I lost interest and stopped listening. Unrealized potential.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Sad that this book makes all Catholic organizations look bad. I’m not even Catholic, but hate to see the only view expressed about it was very negative, repeatedly.

Story
Ten years ago, the Harper family disappeared. Their deserted cottage was left with the water running, the television playing cartoons, the oven ready for baking. The doors were locked from the inside. Overnight, the sleepy village of Nighbrook became notorious as the scene of the unsolved mystery of the decade, an epicentre for ghoulish media speculation. For crime journalist Naomi, solving the case has turned into an obsession. So now, with Ivy Cottage finally listed for sale, it’s her chance to mount an investigation like no other.

Loved just about everything in this book!!
Reviewed: 04-30-24
It’s hard to start with what I loved the most about this book, but it’s probably the mystery of the story. Thinking that I had it figured out long before the book was over and then with each chapter learning that I didn’t really quite have it, at all. Loved it, and most of the accents of the narrator were great, but the American accent was a little off. That is my only complaint, and very minor at that!

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Couldn’t listen to narrator.

This might have been a great book, but I honestly don’t know because I couldn’t get past the narration. She had a rhythm that didn’t change no matter what was happening in the story. Just couldn’t do it.
