Great intro to the benefits of acupuncture
Reviewed: 07-26-23
This is a terrific intro of how acupuncture is beneficial for general well-being, and why is should be part of both preventative care to maintain health, as well as safe treatment for specific conditions. The book is easily accessible and enjoyable with personal stories, it is not overly technical. I was already a big fan of acupuncture--it has helped me with a range of conditions from sinus infections to lower back pain to stress reduction. I especially liked the sections in the book that discuss how acupuncture views the whole person, and that physical and mental health aren't two separate disconnected things. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who may be curious about trying acupuncture but need some convincing to do it. The author makes a good argument for making acupuncture part of everyone's tool kit for health maintenance and longevity. This is not a book about football or fitness training or anything like that, but about how the use of acupuncture can improve everyone's quality of life, health, and longevity. This is a well-written, well-informed, and enjoyable read!

Well-written story. The plot sounds so peculiar, but turned out a page-turner! The author-narrator did a wonderful job voicing the different characters.

Story
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

A masterpiece, excellent narrator

McBride is an incredibly talented story teller, and this narrator, Dominic Hoffman, adds so much color to the story. Every character is pitch perfect (except for those with Irish accents perhaps). Loved every second!
