Sanderson has done better. Narrator was good.
Reviewed: 10-06-20
An early Sanderson work, this simply does not measure up to his later output. The world building is good, but the language is weak and the plot is thin at points. Characters lack emotional depth and often seem like "Mary Sue"s instead of dynamic, breathing figures. I highly recommend Stormlight Archive (which doesn't have these problems), but this was a disappointment.
The narration was good, better than many.

I love the language in this book. There are quite a few really juicy descriptions that were a real delight. And the narrator did a great job expressing the different characters.

Consistently through the book, there are errors in jargon and nomenclature. Instead of "storage", it uses "garage". Instead of "running" it uses "strolling". These are a bad auto-translate. I'm disappointed.

there is some good advice here. but there's also a lot of just a quotes of her writing. and a quarter of the book is an advertisement for other books. was it worth a couple dollars? possibly. but I do wonder if maybe there were other resources that would have given me more information and better advice.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

In general, I think this ranks above The Fold, but below 14 and his Ex-Heroes series. I will continue to be a fan, but this does not quite have the same "can't put down" as some of his earlier work. Still, I enjoyed it and did not wander to a different book in the meanwhile (something I cannot say about many authors).

Rife with inaccuracies
Reviewed: 10-05-17
Not even 1/5 of the way through the book and already noticed some outright flaws. All of these can be verified with sources in public domain, most in Wikipedia:
- Pontifex Maximus was not a title of the Pope until the 15th century.
- Canon law may have been based on Roman law, but only in the sense that it was based on the Justinian Laws from the sixth century. Talking about any form of consolidated canons before the 12th century is just false.
- Saturnalia happened to happen around the same time as the already established holiday of the Nativity of Jesus.
- Easter, as a name, was only appropriated in the German-speaking world. Most of the Christian world called it (and still calls it) some variant of the word "Pasch".
- Runic texts were primarily for religious, not linguistic purposes. (Listen to the lectures on the Vikings for more).
- "Saul was Paul's name before he converted" cannot be substantiated by New Testament texts.
- "The Wanderer" is demonstrably a Christian text when taken in aggregate. Not only because the very end Christianity is mentioned explicitly, nor because of the mention of the divine three times through the poem, but because the poem has direct parallels with the Book of Psalms.
I sincerely recommend the Great Courses "Early Middle Ages" and "Vikings" courses instead.
