Story
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

I love Wil Wheaton but why not R. C. Bray?

The book is better than the movie, as usual. But the movie is great as well. Listening was a tremendous pleasure.
Reviewed: 05-29-24
The drama (spoiler alert) in this novel depicts a protagonist who is alone for the majority of the time. The plot progresses primarily in the protagonist’s thoughts. The book captures this first-person - partially omnipresent - narrative extraordinary well. But there is also plenty of room for cinematic interpretation. Thank you Andy Weir for this harrowing and delightful story while leaving room for a thoroughly enjoyable film.

Simon Vance may read a phone book and I'd love it
Reviewed: 11-30-22
This story is the best of the series so far. But, for me, Simon Vance's talent (on par with Kate Reading's in my humble opinion) is more than sufficient to justify almost any listen. This novel is NOT just any listen. Win Win.

Babbage, from The Economist, exemplifies the thoughtful weekly selection, and deep but brief treatment, of important (but not necessarily headline pounding) science topics. Check out 2020's detailed treatment of viruses and how they have influenced evolution and history through the millennia.

Smart plot, nicely developing cast, Kate Reading -
Reviewed: 10-22-19
I started listening to these books because I couldn't find any new Kate Reading performances on Audible. I've been a fan of Ms. Reading since The Eye of the World and would - really - listen to her reading the phone book. Author Sherry Thomas kept me listening with interesting, subtly sarcastic characters and excellent development of a Sherlockian riff that I'd never imagined. Thank you both.

It is every bit the classic you've heard. Read it.
Reviewed: 09-10-19
The narrator's performance is spot on for Mr. Haldeman's matter-of-fact style. You can actually FEEL the themes and elements of modern SF emerging here. Calling it "groundbreaking" doesn't come close to this novel's influence on the genre.

Story
For a moment, things seemed to be under control for Breq, the soldier who used to be a warship. Then a search of Athoek Station's slums turns up someone who shouldn't exist, and a messenger from the mysterious Presger empire arrives, as does Breq's enemy, the divided and quite possibly insane Anaander Mianaai—ruler of an empire at war with itself. Breq refuses to flee with her ship and crew, because that would leave the people of Athoek in terrible danger. The odds aren't good, but that's never stopped her before.

The author brings insight from numerous disciplines though I was most intrigued by what I learned about ancient Roman society included, perhaps, to highlight the immutability of human nature: nice is not always the same ad good. The core of the work is well written, very character-driven, very satisfying and an extraordinarily good read or listen.

These 2 narrators could read the phone book
Reviewed: 08-05-15
Brandon Sanderson can pull the attention of even the most experienced (jaded) fantasy consumer. Or perhaps this is speculative fiction. It's foundations - quite fantastical - are so very complete and very enticing. Michael Kramer and Kate Redding could read the phone book and I would pay to listen. Among the 3 of them you can only hope to be as helplessly engaged as I have become with the Stormlight Cheonicles. It has been a long while since I've had the pleasure to wonder so intensely what may develop next. It puts me in mind of Frank Herbert's Dune. I can only be grateful.
