Story
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.

Simply Amazing

I absolutely enjoyed and loved the three books. I learned a lot of little things about the people and battles throughout the Civil War. Very long books, but that didn't stop me from listening to them over and over. A must listen.

Story
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

I really enjoyed this book. John Brown Gordon comes across as a great person, I honestly don’t think it was in him to say one cross word about anyone. Listen to this book, you won’t be disappointed.

Story
Written from his death bed, The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant are written by the most well-known Civil War General himself, Ulysses S. Grant. In a review of his life as a private citizen, as well as a general, Grant lets the listener know what a heroic figure he really was. Like so many men before him, Grant describes being pressured into a certain way of life by his father. He never aspired for a military career, but his father insisted on West Point Academy for his schooling.

Great Book - Horrible Narration
Reviewed: 06-24-23
I would have given this one star based off the narration, but the writings of the former General was fantastic.
You would think that the book would have been narrated by an English American instead of a person who doesn’t know how Americans pronounce certain words. For awhile I thought that I was learning about Civil War battles and Generals that I never learned about until I realized that he was butchering the names and places. I wanted to turn the book off many times, but my love for history compelled me to carry on.
Buyer Beware
