Story
In the summer of 2006, author Daron K. Roberts was just one year away from earning a law degree from his dream school: Harvard. But that summer, in the throes of a clerkship at a Texas law firm, Roberts had a revelation - he wanted something different. Daron Roberts wanted to be an NFL football coach. After making the transition from Harvard Law student to NFL newbie, Roberts worked as a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers, and the Cleveland Browns. But he’s not forgotten how hard it was to take that first step in a new direction.

Great example of never giving up
- By Amazon Customer on 01-16-20
I laughed, I cried. I felt like I was there in the NFL rooms!
Reviewed: 10-13-24
Liked: loved the lessons Coach Darin shared and how he applied to live and business. Loved the insider look at the business and work culture of the NFL. Loved the chance to gauge “would I do that” to reach my dreams? (Did not like my answer to that question but the future is still unwritten!)
Thank you for this gift of inspiration and your stories of perseverance. What would happen if we never gave up on our dreams? It appears they might just come true.
Disliked: that it ended. Going straight to microwins!

Story
Decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lamented that English settlers were constantly fleeing over to the Indians - but Indians almost never did the same. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. The most recent example of that attraction is combat veterans who come home to find themselves missing the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life.

I loved the insight of the author. I read this book as a coach seeking a deeper understanding of teamwork. Multiple sources, including this text, confirm that the challenges in personal responsibility and accountability are not limited to my team - but are actually reflections of society. My heart hurts as I live in a military community ... and as we go through an election where we will inevitably try to destroy each party, and each other. But thank you for this book. At the very least, I will try to instill the tribal principles in my own family - which are quite similar to biblical principles.
