Story
World War II began with a metallic roar as the German Blitzkrieg raced across Europe, spearheaded by the most dreaded weapon of the 20th century: the Panzer. No German tank better represents that thundering power than the infamous Tiger, and Otto Carius was one of the most successful commanders to ever take a Tiger into battle, destroying well over 150 enemy tanks during his incredible career.

Not the gritty war tale I was expecting
Reviewed: 04-30-22
I tend to seek out was memoirs for the harrowing tales of combat, the perspective of the common soldier and the interpersonal relations between men on the front lines. I was somewhat let down by this one. The author summarizes most engagements fairly simply and matter of fact rather than in great detail. Other characters are not really developed.
I will say his brief thoughts on how German soldiers are portrayed we're interesting. The last 1/4 of the book documenting his account of the end of the war was fascinating as well.
If you're a die hard Ww2 fanatic it's probably worth the read. however a casual reader looking for a good war story should probably pass this up.

Story
The rulers’ mistakes are paid for with the blood of the people. This is shown in history both recent and ancient, time and time again. It was no different for an Austrian mountain farmer’s son who was thrown into the carnage of the Eastern Front. He was in the prime of his youth, and the German Reich was already close to losing the war. In ripe-old age, he remembers those dark hours that have haunted him throughout his life.

One of the best Eastern front memoirs I've read. Skips over alot of the less exciting details that other memoirs spend time on.

A unique WW2 german memoir
Reviewed: 10-03-20
The story of a german soldier on the eastern front with emphasis on life off of the front. The focus of this book seems to be more of the motivators of a regular german soldier as well as telling what life is like back on the home front during the war. The second part of the book tells the interesting post war story including immigration and building a new life. These aspects made this a unique memoir as other similar stories focused more heavily on battle.
If your looking for a gritty detailed battle story this is not it. if you are trying to understand the mindset of an average german soldier you will find it here.
