Story
Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

OK what are the things that make great fantasy? 1. An interesting storyline 2. Interesting characters that are individually complex and you care about what happens to them. 3. bad guys that are complex and not just cutouts. 4. A complex and enticing fantasy world. All of these elements are present in this book. One does not come across writing that is this compelling very often. This book is well worth any fantasy readers time.

In John Scalzi's re-imagining of H. Hundreds of miles from ZaraCorps headquarters on planet, 178 light-years from the corporations headquarters on Earth, Jack is content as an independent contractor, prospecting and surveying at his own pace. As for his past, thats not up for discussion.

excellent and fun

The original H Beam Piper story Little Fuzzy was quite good. John Scalzi updated and rewrote this for a modern audience. He added the usual wonderful snarky dialogue and characters that make Scalzi's works so fun to read. Further it is especially wonderful to have Wil Wheaton narrate Scalzi's works as he hits just the right tone (of snark). Well worth the read.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Compelling drama
Reviewed: 06-30-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Hate U Give to be better than the print version?
The narrator does an excellent job with voices so that you feel like you are in the characters as they speak.
What did you like best about this story?
The heartfelt exploration of what it would feel like to be a teenager closely involved in one of these shootings.
Which scene was your favorite?
The scene that was the crux of the story--the stop and the shooting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Almost but the story is serious enough that sometimes you needed a break.
Any additional comments?
I don't usually read this genre but glad I stepped out of my usual to read this.

Story
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

If you have like the authors other books you will enjoy this one. What Scalzi does is illustrate the continued follies, machinations and foibles of humanity into the future. Even with us out in space we continue to do the same things that we do on this planet. He presents this in a way that is very entertaining. The "good" guys are rough and ready average type people. The "bad "guys are evil plotters who manage to pull through despite all. Highly recommended.

Korean War first phase
Reviewed: 06-05-17
Mr Shaara does his usual excellent job portraying the individual characters involved in conflict. One gets a true sense of the extremely difficult conditions under which these very brave men fought. The only difficulty with the audio version of this is that you have to be quite familiar with the geography--specifically the locations of some obscure towns around the Chosen reservoir. As a war story or simply to better understand what happened to the Marines in Korea in 1950, this book is quite good.

America was made manifest by its cars. From the assembly lines of Henry Ford to the open roads of Route 66 and Jack Kerouac, America's history is a vehicular history-an idea brought brilliantly to life in this major work by the acclaimed author of Crash Course: The American Automobile Industry's Road from Glory to Disaster.

What did you love best about Engines of Change?
the interesting vignettes about the cars and their history
Have you listened to any of Sean Runnette???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
this is similar to crash course
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
there are parts that have to make you laugh out loud
Any additional comments?
Paul Ingrassia wrote two books. This one and crash course. Crash course has a lot of the same material (even to the point of verbatim repetition). This book covers some of what Crash course covers but more superficially. If you are only going to read one of the two books Paul Ingrassia wrote, read crash course. It covers the history better and the same stories are in that book as well. I really think the author had enough material for a book and a half but wrote two.
One other note. The narrator in this book and crash course reads slowly. I found I was able to play the book at 2x (iphone option but might be on your player as well) and understand it perfectly.
