Story
Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right. Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face.

Slow burn but turned out magical!
Reviewed: 06-21-19
I read this at the recommendation of a friend and really liked it, but the first third of the book was quite slow. I haven’t read anything by Rainbow Rowell before and perhaps should have read Fangirl first (it apparently gives more background on this story). The first third of the book read like the second or third book in a series, where the author rehashes everything that’s already happened, except this is a standalone. If you can get through that first part though, the rest is truly magical. I’m looking forward to Wayward Son!

Deep, Funny, and Thought-Provoking

This book is so well written and extremely thoughtful. It made me laugh and cry at different points. She weaves her own life stories in with those of her clients, forming a meaningful narrative about the power of therapy and connection. I will definitely be listening through this a few more times.

Just okay

This was an okay book. I appreciated that it featured a f/f romance with a happy ending, but found the plot somewhat predictable and the other characters flat. Good read for young adults, not something an adult might get as easily lost in.

Story
In 2014, Lacy Johnson was giving a reading from The Other Side, her “instant classic” (Kirkus Reviews) memoir of kidnapping and rape, when a woman asked her what she would like to happen to her rapist. This collection, a meditative extension of that answer, draws from philosophy, art, literature, mythology, anthropology, film, and other fields, as well as Johnson’s personal experience, to consider how our ideas about justice might be expanded beyond vengeance and retribution to include acts of compassion, patience, mercy, and grace.

I want to read her other books now

This is the first book I've read by Lacy Johnson and I loved it. I added her other books to my wish list to read once I get more credits. She has an amazing way of weaving cultural critique and personal narrative together.
