Story
In April 1975, Ralph White was asked by his boss to transfer from the Bangkok branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank to the Saigon Branch. He was tasked with closing the branch if and when it appeared that Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese army and ensure the safety of the senior Vietnamese employees. But when he arrived, he realized the situation in Saigon was far more perilous than he had imagined. The senior staff members there urged him to evacuate the entire staff of the branch and their families, which was far more than he was authorized to do.

One of this things that is immediately applicable

The fable story version of this book gets a little tiresome (but is still effective) but overall this short book packs a wallop for explaining why people are who they are and how to effectively use your talents (geniuses) to enjoy work more and create a better team.

Delivers on its premise

What a delightful and inspirational person - made all the more poignant by the fact that he is over 90 but sounds like an excited kid with the wisdom of 9 decades of life. His dramatic reading - part Captain Kirk and part Shakespearian bard, gets only better as he hits warp speed in the final chapters. Thoroughly witty, thought provoking and enjoyable. Everything I look for in a good book. I didn’t want it to end.

Brutally honest about his challenging journey
Reviewed: 06-06-23
As he explains in the introduction, this is part autobiography and part cautionary tale of how guns and the NRA have played a central role to divide our nation with fear and threats of violence. As with any good autobiography, he has both a good story to tell, and the honesty about himself and his personal observations to make it a compelling listen. Excellently written. I loved how he tied in various episodes in his life to lessons learned and reflected on later. Highly recommended!

Adventures and Insights into Wilderness Medicine

Great stories of the author's journey of being a paramedic in a wilderness setting and his discovery of being better suited to an occupation that allowed him to be outdoors. Everything I look for in a good nonfiction book - personal insights to learn from, new subject matter to discover and interesting storytelling. Great narration too. Made me want to learn more about emergency medicine. Gave me a real appreciation of the behind the scenes operations that provide the safety nets for our exploration of our National Parks.

Story
At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Great stories from a world class adventurer
Reviewed: 05-22-22
Ridgeway is an excellent storyteller, descriptions that put you right there as well as poignant observations and introspections of his own life and those around him. These are chapter versions of his pervious books, various other adventures and brushes with danger. He also describes how important the preservation of nature and the earth's animals are to our true enjoyment of wilderness. I usually skip around among several books at a time, but not with this one - I couldn't stop listening.
