It's the Thought That Counts
Reviewed: 10-30-15
I picked this story up because my attention was caught by the unusual perspective; I was curious to see what the author would do with a character who has only ever been hinted at in canon.
I found myself disappointed by the poor writing. The timeline jumps around a great deal, and there's so much head-hopping between Plageius and Sidious in the second half of the book that it makes the story difficult to get into. These characters aren't portrayed as particularly sympathetic. Plageius throughout the book is pretty one-dimensional: I'm going to overthrow the Jedi The entire book leads up to the climax, where it simply ends, and that is ineffective when the movies already told us how this book was going to turn out. I wished that the author had spent some more time developing the two Sith lords as characters; maybe then I would have been more emotionally invested in what was going to happen. Lost a great deal of steam by the end.
However, I did enjoy the way that it constructed the timeline. Getting an idea of the world just prior to the prequel movies was excellent, and seeing just how much of a hand the Sith have really had throughout the entire Star Wars timeline was very interesting. It's honestly mostly political thriller with the occasional lightsaber thrown in.
Overall, I'd probably recommend it simply for understanding the politics; but if you want a well-developed character in the mix, go elsewhere.

I followed the writing of this book in Carrie's videos from start to finish, and I've been greatly anticipating it. I'm very glad that I chose to purchase the audiobook, because Carrie's voice and personality absolutely shines through and speaks to the heart and the soul.
The advice in this book can apply to the young teens just getting started and the young adults just starting their own lives. Carrie's optimistic, gentle, kind outlook on life is inspiring, and brought me to tears to see such a beautiful soul in the world. This book comes highly recommended, and just let yourself listen and understand Carrie and understand your own life.
