Story
Eleven-year-old George Washington Black—or Wash—a field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is initially terrified when he is chosen as the manservant of his master’s brother. To his surprise, however, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning, and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human.

This was disappointing. It began a little slow and little more interesting as it unfolded. A few surprises that I did not see coming. The end was an epic fail. The narration was so low I had to put my device on maximum.

This was my first time listening to this particular author. I found the story to be very slow and difficult to get through because of a pedophilia/and sexual assaults.
At the point I thought the perpetrator would be brought to Justice the story took on a different twist. the story could have been a lot better and the end was obviously the beginning of the next book. unless it is free I will not use a credit on it.

I truly was not impressed by the story at all. The storyline was far fetched at best. I believe it is categorized as historical fiction. Emphasis on the fiction portion. I really wish these authors would stop writing about the antebellum South with the brakes on meaning there was some treacherous things that were done and people were called the n-word regularly. This story came off as though they did not want to offend anyone. if you going to write about this time the reader should automatically know they may be offended.

I was very disappointed with this book. it seems the author was going out of the way trying to be politically correct. Let's face it if you're going to write about the antebellum South and slavery the n-word is going to come up. parts of the story just left me hanging trying to figure out what people were doing that the author did not want to talk about. Historical fiction that includes slavery are going to have some atrocities. glossing over them did not help this book. I should have followed my first thought and sent it back after chapter 3.

I truly struggled to get through this. It became somewhat interesting around chapter 15. The accents that were use were so heavy it made the story hard to follow. I am a fan of historical fiction but this really missed the mark in performance and substance.

this story had two main characters that had quite a few situations and entanglements. I felt the story ended abruptly. I would like to have known how some of those relationships ended or reconciled. Maybe the author is setting us up for a sequel but the way it ended I don't know how that would go.
