If the author happens to notice low profits from the sales of this audio….
It’s because of the narration. Hoye is a great voice for tv cold case files, but he makes a joke out of the events of this book.
It could be an intentional spoof, but I doubt it.

Story
When a young red-haired woman is found brutally murdered in downtown Chicago, one detail stands out: the red lipstick encircling her wrists and ankles. Detective Harriet Foster is on the case, even though she’s still grieving the sudden death of her partner. As a Black woman in a male-dominated department, Foster anticipates a rocky road ahead acclimating to a new team—and building trust with her new partner isn’t coming easily. After another victim turns up with the same lipstick markings, Foster suspects she’s looking for a serial killer.

premise had potential - wrong writer

Story had a good premise but the book was written by the wrong person. Narration is bad, comical (not intentionally). I read through just one chapter. It’s a better read than it is a listen but overall really not worth the drollness.

Story
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Messy narration

Not consistent. There are far too many distractions from the story due to the inconsistencies and excess melodrama of the narrator. However, I prefer reading over “performing” anyway, so I’m not an impartial judge.
