Great Narration; Decent Story; F-Bombs galore
Reviewed: 03-06-22
First, the good. Nolan North is (expectedly) great in his narration. While he excels at capturing Drake’s personality, he also does well with the other characters and text.
The story is decent. A few predictable twists, and few less predictable, but it will keep the listener mostly entertained throughout.
On the other hand, it feels like the author has little knowledge of the characters already established backstories and personalities. Granted, she’s writing within the confines of a movie novelization.
It was also a curious choice to drop the F-bomb as often as she did. For a book based upon 4 video games and a movie rated T and PG-13 respectively, the fluent profanity would’ve warranted an M/R rating in other media.
All said, it was moderately entertaining listen, with a great performance, though certainly not the same characters we’ve known for years. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

Story
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

“Hey, Siri, read me a book.”
Reviewed: 02-03-22
Unfortunately, the poor narration distracts from the message of the text. The narrator employs awkward pauses throughout, and stilts the dialogue in such a way that makes it seem as if she is being forced to read the material for the first time.
Great narration should draw the listener into the story. It shouldn’t distract from the message… and it certainly shouldn’t sound like Siri is providing an update on the weather.
