Story
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Very disappointing

The book and its Author came with high recommendations from a friend. I started listening and couldn’t get through much. The historical and factual inaccuracy of the first story is staggering. It is as if no research was done. A small example, a quick check confirmed, that Moscow State Conservatory was not named after P. I. Tchaikovsky in 1918. Considering Mr. Towles’ background, credentials, and accolades I found myself completely bewildered and unable to proceed. Maybe the book continues with matters that the author understands better, but that was enough for me.

The “Slow Horses,” as the failed spies of Slough House are called, are doomed to spend the rest of their careers pushing paper, but they all want back in on the action. When one of their own is kidnapped and held for ransom, the agents of Slough House must defeat the odds, overturning all expectations of their competence, to breach the top-notch security of MI5’s intelligence headquarters, Regent’s Park, and steal valuable intel.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

I do not have a specific genre that I am attracted to. Much more I value specific authors and performers. This was the first, and I am sure not the last time I have encountered a book by Mr. Herron. It is excellently written and masterfully performed. Author’s sense of humor deserves a special mention. A real treat.

Story
It’s the summer of 1994, and all Maeve Murray wants are good final exam results so she can earn her ticket out of the wee Northern Irish town she has grown up in during the Troubles—away from her crowded home, the silence and sadness surrounding her sister’s death, and most of all, away from the simmering violence of her divided community. And as a first step, Maeve’s taken a summer job in a local shirt factory working alongside Protestants with her best friends, kind, innocent Caroline Jackson and privileged and clever Aoife O’Neill.

Every now and then, unfortunately not often enough, one is fortunate to come across a good book. Scattered among the good books there are great books.
This is one of them.
Do not miss it.
Special mention for the performance, as I cannot imagine reading this book with my inner “voice” without the nuance of the language.

Story
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

In this riveting collection of stories from acclaimed author Jess Walter, a teenage girl tries to live up to the image of her beautiful, missing mother. An elderly couple confronts the fiction writer eavesdropping on their conversation.

An excellent collection of stories. Despite some obvious west coast political views (an obvious Oregon connection), there is nuance in these stories that makes them worthwhile. Excellent performance as well.

In Nadežra, peace is as tenuous as a single thread. The ruthless House Indestor has been destroyed, but darkness still weaves through the city’s filthy alleys and jewel-bright gardens, seen by those who know where to look. Derossi Vargo has always known. He has sacrificed more than anyone imagines to carve himself a position of power and influence among the nobility, hiding a will of steel behind a velvet smile. He'll be damned if he lets anyone threaten what he's built.

All around excellent. A very satisfying read and a great performance. This book is better than the first, albeit by a narrow margine.
The complexity of the world and amazing and the characters are great. The pacing is perfect.
I cannot stop wondering how two people write something like this together.
