Elementary dear Fry

What a wonderful experience! Stephen Fry’s exquisite interpretation brings out one of the most interesting and yet little noticed features of Conan Doyle’s writing: the amazing diversity of characters of the time with their particularities, different accents, cultures and moral codes. I strongly suggest the listener to take advantage of the podcasts: Stephen Fry’s Secrets of the Victorian, Edwardian ages and of the twenties before embarking on the adventures of Mr. Holmes. They provide a comprehensive insight on the époque and are delightful to listen.

Story
Chronicling Andrew Solomon's stint on the barricades in Moscow in 1991, when he joined artists in resisting the coup whose failure ended the Soviet Union; his 2002 account of the rebirth of culture in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban; his insightful appraisal of a Myanmar steeped in contradictions as it slowly, fitfully pushes toward freedom; and many other stories of profound upheaval, this book provides a unique window onto the very idea of social change.

From the frenetic underground in Russia, to the heartbreaking stories, in Cambodia, to the delightful waters of the Atlantic sea, Andrew leaves us wishing to have been his travel companions. And I thank him for that.

Story
The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against the city of Troy, to which they will lay siege for 10 whole and very bloody years. It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers the war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of them all. Aphrodite bribes Paris with the heart of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of the Greeks, and naturally, nature takes its course.

The whole trilogy is a panacea for the weary heart, while Fry’s interpretation is ambrosia for one’s years. I am sincerely grateful to have found these audiobooks. Can’t wait for the odyssey!

Story
The Greek myths are amongst the greatest stories ever told, passed down through millennia and inspiring writers and artists as varied as Shakespeare, Michelangelo, James Joyce and Walt Disney. They are embedded deeply in the traditions, tales and cultural DNA of the West. You'll fall in love with Zeus, marvel at the birth of Athena, wince at Cronus and Gaia's revenge on Ouranos, weep with King Midas and hunt with the beautiful and ferocious Artemis.

What a treat!!

When I found out the book was written by Stephen Fry I was immediately interested, being a long time admirer of his work, humor and intelligence. But when I discovered that it was red by the author himself, the expectations went through the roof of Olympus. And still, I must say, the experience surpassed them all.
The mixture of diligent research, very creative adaptation, and some amazing references, both pop and erudite, all wrapped in Fry’s delightful interpretation, result in an unforgettable journey.
Thank you so much Stephen!
