Story
Kitty Harris has it all: cosily coupled up with boyfriend Archie, she’s putting in the hours at an ad agency to land her dream job. OK, so maybe they’ve become a bit too comfortable in their routine, with pizza night every Thursday, and maybe the agency isn’t so much up-and-coming as been-and-gone, but Kitty is happy. Until one diamond ring sitting pretty in her pepperoni ruins everything. Kitty does NOT want to get married, not after being caught in the crosshairs of her parent’s destructive divorce.

Ever since hearing about the SAR teams in our national parks I’ve been fascinated by wilderness emergency services. This book was absolutely amazing.

Story
Night is one of the masterpieces of Holocaust literature. First published in 1958, it is the autobiographical account of an adolescent boy and his father in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel writes of their battle for survival and of his battle with God for a way to understand the wanton cruelty he witnesses each day. In the short novel Dawn (1960), a young man who has survived World War II and settled in Palestine joins a Jewish underground movement and is commanded to execute a British officer who has been taken hostage.

It’s literally just night, not the trilogy. The narrator didn’t even google how to pronounce words not in English.

Story
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Then he arrived at Hampeden College and quickly became seduced by the sweet, dark rhythms of campus life—in particular by an elite group of five students, Greek scholars, worldly, self-assured, and at first glance, highly unapproachable. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

Donna Tartt literally ruined her own book for me.

I’m usually not this mean in reviews but this is one of the absolute worst narrations I’ve heard in my life, and used to listen to LibriVox. A book club I’m in decided to read the Secret History and I drive at least an hour and a half every day I work, so I listen to audiobooks avidly. I listened to about a minute of this and questioned if I’d selected the correct book or somehow started listening to a podcast. I’m honestly worried that once I start reading the physical book I may not be able to get through it without hearing her voice.

I tried so hard to enjoy this but I honestly couldn’t stand the narrator. I usually don’t sample audio books before buying but from this point forward, I will.
