Story
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

great to the end
Reviewed: 03-21-24
I had never read Louise penny. For some reason I thought she was romance, but they are all very good and after 17 books you would think the stories would get repetitive or old, but the last one was actually one of the best!
I have listened to all and in time I'm sure back and listen to them again, they are the type of book you can revisit yearly.

does not compete with a boy's life
Reviewed: 02-17-22
I listened to a boy's life and it is one of my favorite bucks. I've listened to it multiple times when you just need a nice uplifting book however this one it's nothing like that one at all. there are similarities but not in a good way. I won't give up on this author but this book just did not do it for me I'll try a a few others before I decide that he only had one good one in him. hopefully this is just the only bad one and I happened to choose it.

Story
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Story
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Amazing what can be indured and forgiven
Reviewed: 07-05-20
The narration was perfect. The dialect is spot-on.
It is amazing what children can endure and still come out whole. That he was able to forgive shows that it's not always nurture that comes out on top many times its nature and to never be too quick to judge someone else until you have as they say w"Walked a mile in their moccasins."
I think this is a story everyone should read or listen to even though at times it's hard to hear what demands can sometimes be put on children.

Story
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.
