Story
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Not what I expected.

went into this expecting magic and wonder, and got deep, beautiful, miserable, philosophical introspection instead.
this book seems to hate itself. it has a dragging plot, the characters are bored and miserable, and Q is the king of a self-loathing that makes more than half the book entirely about happiness, love, betrayal, and mental health.
i highly recommend this book purely for how much it refuses to follow the rules, but you better be ready for the dark story it's telling. it's pretty miserable at times.

Meet Skulduggery Pleasant: detective, sorcerer, warrior. Oh yes. And dead. Skulduggery Pleasant is gone, sucked into a parallel dimension overrun by the Faceless Ones. If his bones haven’t already been turned to dust, chances are he’s insane, driven out of his mind by the horror of the ancient gods. There is no official, Sanctuary-approved rescue mission. There is no official plan to save him.

this book may have screwed me up a bit as a kid.

it's not as gut-spilling gore-sprayingly graphic as the Demonata, but the horrible life Darren is thrown into is truly a nightmare. i think as an adult now, It's even more haunting to imagine such s horrible thing, but as a kid I loved it.

great story, awful volume inconsistency
Reviewed: 12-05-21
this is probably my favorite book in the series so far, tied with The Bellmaker. fantastic performances, music, singing, and an epic journey across Mossflower and beyond. unfortunately, this perfect performance is marred with inconsistent volume of each voice, making some parts too quiet to hear, and some suddenly painfully loud. overall, highly recommend this one, but the recording feels rough.

Story
Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

A provoking story of commitment and failure
Reviewed: 08-06-18
Son of a Witch takes a bounding leap into the story of Liir, and how, under the shadow of his former caretaker Elphaba, he struggles to find a purpose and drive to his existence among the dire needs of his world around him. Love, loss, abandonment, family, and death are explored in a deeply fleshed-out world that Gregory Maguire paints so beautifully.
