Story
America's great promise of equality has always rung hollow in the ears of African Americans. But today the situation has grown even more dire. From the murders of black youth by the police to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act to the disaster visited upon poor and middle-class black families by the Great Recession, it is clear that black America faces an emergency - at the very moment the election of the first black president has prompted many to believe we've solved America's race problem.

Change will require sacrifice!
Reviewed: 08-22-17
A thorough review of politics from Jackson '84 to Obama '12. Glaud details the emergence of black liberalism and how it limits change, politically and socially. Despite being written prior to the '16 election, the outcome of that election validated the continued work of new, young, divergent leaders willing to disturb the peace!!

Story
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Born a Crime...full of life!

Trevor Noah has an amazing story and I am so glad he has shared it with the world! The way he drew parallels between apartheid in South Africa and the founding of America, was masterful. His relationship with his mother, one of the strongest women alive imo, and how she was intentional about his development and direction in life - what an inspiration!

Story
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Secure Your Body
Reviewed: 05-23-17
What a powerful message conveyed to his son and moreover to a people, "secure your body." Coates gives power to creating your own existence and legacy. Having black sons that enjoy a measure of "privilege," this book helped me realize they must be shown and taught how to handle/respond to reminders of their blackness. Which is ultimately their uniqueness. Thank you...
