Worth a Listen

Very well narrated. At first it felt like a whole lot of short quotes and not so useful high level guidance, but as the book went on it became more practical. I'm not in the retail or food industry, but there are still many great lessons for other types of businesses. I would recommend, even if only for the nuggets dotted throughout the book.

Magda can come across as arrogant or like she's boasting at times, but I don't think that is the case - she's telling a story of her life which is filled with success, so I guess it's difficult not to come across that way at times. I really enjoy her direct nature and telling it how it is. Her stories are interesting and enlightening, and I recommend this to anyone, whether interested in business, entrepreneurship, politics, the financial services industry, women in business or state capture, it's a must read.

Story
Most people associate performance management with the annual review, which is universally dreaded by employees, management, and HR professionals alike. It's a cookie-cutter, fear-based, top-down approach that emphasizes negatives over positives and stifles healthy career conversations. It's never been shown to motivate anyone to do anything but try to avoid it, but nobody feels like they have any alternative. Tamra Chandler has one - and it works.

Not Bad, But Not Great

Not Bad, But Not Great
Reviewed: 02-17-20
Interesting, but too packed with corporate jargon and abstract concepts. Very specifically aimed at large corporates, and can be difficult to relate to smaller businesses. A little too "sales pitchy" about the authors own business and services.
