One of the best listens around

I really love Angus Watson's fun spin on "historical" fiction in which he transports us to an old place and time. He then throws a wild fantasy at us using what he knows about the place and time that is more fun to experience, for me, than almost any other author out there. Although all together different in delivery and scope I put these books right up there with Sandersons Stormlight series, the Warded Man, and all of my other favorite series that take me to a new exciting reality. Great series here and a great ending as well!

Story
A war fueled by the dark powers of sorcery is about to engulf the peaceful land of Osten Ard—for Prester John, the High King, slayer of the dread dragon Shurakai, lies dying. And with his death, an ancient evil will at last be unleashed, as the Storm King, undead ruler of the elvishlike Siti, seeks to regain his lost realm through a pact with one of human royal blood. Then, driven by spell-inspired jealousy and hate, prince will fight prince, while around them the very land begins to die.

drones on and on.

I approached this book with optimism due to the book reviews and critiques. The story works to build into a complex storyline with interesting characters...but every time the story started to become engrossing it progressed into an extremely long, monotonous episode. if it was one example I would attribute it to plot building but it occurs throughout the book. Also, the campfire songs that occur frequently are pure torture. If you haven't read this book, I would not recommend this audiobook as it is easily the worst that I have worked hard to listen through.

Story
In this “deftly and originally executed” (Booklist) New York Times best-selling novel, Vaelin Al Sorna must help his Queen reclaim her Realm. Only his enemy has a dangerous new collaborator, one with powers darker than Vaelin has ever encountered...“The Ally is there, but only ever as a shadow, unexplained catastrophe or murder committed at the behest of a dark vengeful spirit. Sorting truth from myth is often a fruitless task". After fighting back from the brink of death, Queen Lyrna is determined to repel the invading Volarian army.
