I’m a big consumer of fiction in Failed State’s genre, but this is the first time I’ve seen an author address what comes after the collapse. The “day after tomorrow,” if you will. The world that Brown describes is believable enough to be just one bad hurricane season, terrorist attack, or recession (or all three at once) away from becoming our reality. It’s bleak, but not without a little hope. If you like lawyer stories or collapse stories, this one is for you.
The narrator is great. He reminds one of that Texan from Austin, but in a way that is authentic in its own right.
