Story
During the final three years of the Obama administration, Richard Stengel, the former editor of Time magazine and an Under Secretary of State, was the single person in government tasked with unpacking, disproving, and combating both ISIS's messaging and Russian disinformation. Then, in 2016, as the presidential election unfolded, Stengel watched as Donald Trump used disinformation himself, weaponizing the grievances of Americans who felt overlooked. In fact, Stengel quickly came to see how all three players had used the same playbook: ISIS sought to make Islam great again....

This is an excellent account of how foreign powers attempt to conquer the information space, and the US Government’s successes and failures to counter those efforts.

Story
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Engrossing and touching

This is a gripping story of families searching for answers to questions left to them by The Greatest Generation. It brings to light the horrible and lasting damage suffered by the men who won the War, but lost the battles that ensued. Dale Maharidge’s commitment to seeing his search through to the end is matched only by his story-telling ability. The Dead Drink First is a testament to him and the incredible people he met along the way.
