Interesting Premise But...

The plot has a lot of potential but the story falls short. The characters become annoying early on (which is mostly due to the writing and partly due to the narration). I was interested enough to finish the book but wouldn't recommend it.

Story
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Story
Comedians Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld never thought anyone would watch their silly little sitcom about a New York comedian sitting around talking to his friends. NBC executives didn't think anyone would watch either, but they bought it anyway, hiding it away in the TV dead zone of summer. But against all odds, viewers began to watch, first a few and then many, until nine years later nearly 40 million Americans were tuning in weekly.

An Interesting Story with Bad Impersonations
Reviewed: 05-15-22
If you loved Seinfeld, you'll really enjoy this book. It starts out slow, but picks up and provides several "pull back the curtain" type interesting stories.
Downside: Throughout the book, the narrator attempts to impersonate every person quoted (Seinfeld, Larry David, Jason Alexander, etc.). At certain points it was painful to hear.

The author/prosecutor thinks he is Perry Mason, Matlock, and Jack McCoy... and spends 85% of the book explaining his greatness to the reader/listener. He includes several emails written by the defendants. It's painful to hear them read aloud (mostly due to overwhelming amount of poor grammar). The case is interesting but this book is terrible.

It's not terrible, but the summary gives the impression that The Rumor is on the same level as "Gone Girl" or "Girl on a Train." Spoiler Alert: it's not. The story, characters, and dialogue are straight out of a Lifetime original movie. The performance is overly dramatic to the point of annoyance. Not worth the time to listen.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.
