Story
In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how geography, combined with demography and energy independence, will pave the way for one of the great turning points in history, and one in which America reasserts its global dominance. No other country has a greater network of internal waterways, a greater command of deepwater navigation, or a firmer hold on industrialization technologies than America.

Fascinating Geopolitical Look Around The World
Reviewed: 08-06-19
If even half of what Zeihan believes will take place, actually happens, it's worth the listen. An interesting tour around the world and look into nations and what their outlook may be in light of geography, resources, population spreads. If he is correct, it's looking rosy to live in the U.S. moving forward and sketchy at best in many other places around the world. From future wars, to economic capabilities, to terrorism and climate change, he covers a little bit of everything. One of the more interesting listens I've found on Audible.

Story
Few subjects are as compelling-or as endlessly variable-as love and marriage. The Bible is filled with references to husbands and wives, from the story of Adam and Eve to advice in the New Testament, each open to interpretation. In The Meaning of Marriage, Timothy Keller, pastor of New York's Redeemer Presbyterian Church and bestselling author of The Reason for God, uses the scriptures as his guide to show readers what God's call to marriage is, and why this is such a powerful call.

Story
The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

Shocking History. Great Primer for Moby Dick
Reviewed: 06-25-19
Philbrick is brilliant in this look at the Essex tragedy. His ability to observe the details and connect them to the larger picture and the ironies that come with it made for a great experience. Many people complained of the audio, it's a little choppy during the into, but the rest of the book was fine. An incredible story of survival and horrific conditions. For someone who doesn't have a past or strong interest in whaling, I found this to be a fascinating look into an industry that was a major player in the world economy during the 19th century. I'd highly recommend this read.

Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

A Must For Jazz Fans & Newcomers
Reviewed: 05-22-19
Gioia hit a home-run with this book on the history of Jazz. An undertaking covering this much ground must have been daunting. I imagine writing any volume on the history of Jazz will leave some fan, somewhere feeling like parts were left out. Gioia covers most of the key areas. Latin/Cuban Jazz isn't given much attention which is puzzling. There are other works to go to if you want to truly get stories behind specific songs or artists, but as far as a one volume go-to work, this is a must for music lovers. Gioia does a great job of tracing jazz back to its roots in the African slave trade and Blues music. He covers a who's who of key artists and recordings. It's too bad Audible can't incorporate those songs into the audio book but this is a great resource for dedicated Jazz fans to take and do further study. Gioia covers key movements in the music's history and comes to current day with artists to look into and a futuristic pondering of where the music will go next. Will be looking into other work by Gioia based on the strength of this work.

Tripp knocked it out of the park with this book. Not only the best parenting book I've ever read, but it does an incredible job of laying out the importance of the Gospel in life and especially in our responsibility as parents. The narration on this is fantastic, the principals are life giving and Jesus is exalted. I will be drawing on these principals in my own parenting and recommending it to other parents who struggle with what can be both a joy filled and challenging life endeavor. We are sinners in need of grace, raising and teaching sinners in need of grace. When we see ourselves as ambassadors of Christ, it can change the entire paradigm.

A Fun Listen If You Don't Take It Too Seriously

This is an audible original dramatic performance. This isn't an exhaustive audio documentary. The narrator has a flair for the dramatic. Grab an in depth biography or other sources if you're needing something in depth. But if you take this for what it is, a fun performance based look inside the album and it's aftermath, it's a fun ride inside the man in the black and the album that put him back on top.

Author Jemar Tisby reveals the obvious - and the far more subtle - ways the American church has compromised what the Bible teaches about human dignity and equality.

A Difficult & Needed Look Back
Reviewed: 02-28-19
Tisby's look back through the history of the American Church and it's ignorance, complicity or in some cases participation in racism is a challenging and difficult listen, but a needed one. This is a very quick tour though history and further reading would be required to fully understand times and events shared, and even ones that this book didn't cover. However it is a great introduction to needed knowledge. Sin is an ugly thing and it is evidenced here, but there is not an overwhelming theme of targeting one people group. Nor is this simply a lament that fails to bring hope, the final chapter gives constructive ideas and ways we as the church can continue to change the tide from a dark and devastating past.

Luther Ignited The Reformation, But So Much More

This work by Metaxas would be a valuable use of time for students of history, specifically the Reformation. It would also be very valuable reading for anyone of Protestant, Evangelical and Reformed theological perspectives. Metaxas does a great job of separating myth from fact, while still keeping you interested. Far beyond his impact on the Reformation, Luther's pursuit of truth, bringing God's Word to all people in their own language and fighting the ills of the Roman Catholic Church at the time, lead to many ideas and beliefs we take for granted today, but largely shaped the Western World beyond his lifetime.

A Fine Review To Lewis & Clark
Reviewed: 12-19-18
Excellently written, painfully well researched, a great window into Thomas Jefferson's passion for expanding into the West, as well as Lewis and Clark's incredible accomplishment. It is fascinating to go into this detail on how they accomplished the trip to the Pacific Ocean and back, yet also how the ideas were birthed by Jefferson and Lewis and what became of them after the great journey. The narration is a little robotic sounding at times, but very clear and easy to follow. A great book, a must listen for any U.S. History enthusiast.
