Story
Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

I like pretty much anything narrated by Julia Whelan. This was no exception. The ending was a plot twist I didn’t see coming!

Story
In this “rich, complex family saga” (USA Today) full of long-buried family secrets, Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, blithely ignorant of all that awaits them. By 2016, they have four radically different daughters, each in a state of unrest.

Narration was pretty good but the story was depressing. That’s a lot of hours of listening to snarky barbs and family dysfunction with no upside in sight. I kept expecting some happy news. When I had 10 hours more of listening I had to stop. Just not worth being dragged down further.

A history I never knew
Reviewed: 05-04-24
I was 15 in 1967 and somewhat aware of the war. By the time I was 17 and so many young men were conscripted or went to college or to Canada to escape the draft, I became painfully aware of how wrong it was. However I never thought of the women who served. This was an eye opener for me. Julia Whelan, as always, was fabulous narrator. Please read this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of it—performance and story. I listened to the author’s notes about how many sources she used for research and blended them to make the story. Having lived through the Cuban missile crisis, I found it fascinating.

Narrator ruined it for me
Reviewed: 04-11-23
The narrator does not do a good job of differentiating voices, so I couldn't tell whether a man or woman was speaking, which became confusing. I decided to stop listening and get the book from the library. I think the story is probably interesting, but better read than listened to.

Story
Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army. And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

Story
Caroline Murphy swore she'd never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father's death, her mother selfishly forced her to move - during her senior year of high school, no less - back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers.

The narration and the story were wonderful to listen to. The two narrators were wonderful and spot on. But the ending left much to be desired. There were so many unanswered story lines. I was left hanging and it could have been wrapped up with an epilogue.
