Story
Brimming with rich, electrifying tales of the precious dye and its ancient heritage, Indigo is also the story of a personal quest: Catherine McKinley is the descendant of a clan of Scots who wore indigo tartan; Jewish "rag traders"; a Massachusetts textile factory owner; and African slaves - her ancestors were traded along the same Saharan routes as indigo, where a length of blue cotton could purchase human life.

I tried to get through the book and finally did but could not find a plot anywhere. The choice of narrator was unfortunate as her voice was not suited to tbe writing style or the subject. This was not a book worth reading. I mistakenly thought this was a non fiction book on Indigo not a novel. My interest is on dye formulas. But it as a novel, it wasn't worth the time I spent reading it.

In Across That Bridge, Congressman John Lewis draws from his experience as a prominent leader of the civil rights movement to offer timeless wisdom, poignant recollections, and powerful principles for anyone interested in challenging injustices and inspiring real change toward a freer, more peaceful society. The civil rights movement gave rise to the protest culture we know today, and the experiences of leaders like Congressman Lewis, a close confidant to Martin Luther King, Jr., have never been more relevant.

Elijah Cummings was truly a man of peace and love. He learned non-violence as a child in Mississippi He became peace in places like the Selma jail. If we, as a nation, could learn the lessons of love and peace, we could again become a great nation. We could become a Great society that took care of the poor, the infirm, the abandoned in our society, and the elderly who need our care. Elijah Cummings life was dedicated to that. May we we follow in his footsteps.

Excellent introduction to Thomas Merton
Reviewed: 12-26-19
This is the best overview of the life and spiritually of Thomas Merton in aural form. Father Ciorra has taught courses on Merton for many years and is a favorite teacher at Sacred Heart University. I have listened to other courses he has given on the History of Christian Spirituality and they too were excellent. This Merton course is simply exemplary. I have been studying Merton for over 30 years and he presented some things I had not heard before.

This is a book to read again and again in order to get all the gems contained in this book. Alan Arkin expressed very eloquently his experience with Eastern meditation. As a meditator for 50 years, he has a mature outlook on his practice and on the effects of his practice. This is a great for meditators East and West. Western meditators can learn from his dedication to meditation, both when you feel like it and when you don't. They can also learn that distractions will be part of meditation but you must let them go and go back to the name of Jesus or paying attention your breath. Alan was down to earth as he talked about his practice which will be of great help to contemplative East and West.

Story
In the Middle Ages and Counter-Reformation, some saw Mary as almost "divine". She was placed on a pedestal and removed from ordinary life experiences. Johnson suggests that we "ask Mary to rejoin us on the ground". Drawing from Scripture, especially the Magnificat, tradition, and Vatican II, Johnson describes Mary as God's friend and prophet. She shows that Mary is not well served when she is portrayed as the maternal face of God, or as the ideal woman or eternal feminine.

Sister Elizabeth Johnson is one of the premiere American theologians of our time. This presentation on Marian thology is so necessary for those of us who struggle to with images of Mary that grew up in the Middle Ages when they called her "Queen of Heaven" and "Redemtorix" . She is suggesting that we, among other things that we take her off her pedistal and include her back in the communion of Saints.
