Story
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Second time’s a charm
Reviewed: 08-06-22
Many years ago, in my early twenties, a friend had just finished reading this book. She was so enthusiast about it and wanted to share with me. I read it but wasn’t moved by it as she was. Fifty years later, after listening to two other Stegner novels, I came again to this book. It’s everything a great novel should be. Don’t miss it! The narration is excellent. I’ve found that the narrator can interfere with a great book, but can’t destroy it. And a good reader can take you into the book, often in ways that add to the written word. I’m now moving on to another Stegner novel, Crossing to Safety. He is truly an under appreciated writer, worth your listening time.

Story
The third volume of this gripping family saga, End of the Chapter, shifts to the Cherrells - cousins of the Forsytes by marriage. Young Dinny Cherrell in particular cherishes their ancestral home, Condaford Grange, which represents stability in a rapidly changing world. Through his depiction of the lives and loves of this family, Galsworthy throws a brilliant spotlight on the social and political upheavals of the 1930s.

Listened to all three volumes. Nobel prize much deserved for this unforgettable saga. Feeling a little lost now it’s been such a journey with theses families. Even learned to love Soames. The narration was superb. If you love English literature this will be addictive.

Defending Flo Gibson
Reviewed: 12-19-21
After reading several negative reviews of this narrator, I want to add my two cents. I’ve been reading and listening with audible to many of Trollope’s novels. There’s no doubt that Timothy West is a fantastic narrator perfectly suited for Trollope’s stories. After listening to the sample of Ms Gibsons reading I was uncertain but gave it a try. Very different but I found her narration quite good. Her voice is lovely to me and captures the mood of life in the counties.
