The Coziest Mysteries
Reviewed: 09-30-20
I usually prefer originals to dramatized and abridged performances, but all the BBC Radio 4 performances are welcome exceptions. These are well-written radio play adaptations, and a pleasure to listen to. I enjoy hearing the way they adapt the stories I am familiar with, in addition to experiencing the new ones.

Well-performed and just original enough

This is one of my favorites of the Audible Originals series. Whether you enjoy M.R. James or not, you're in luck. If you like him, these stories are thematically similar enough to resonate, but diverge enough from the originals to be interesting, even altering outcomes. They are also modernized without being too ostentatious about the updating. The only element that's missing is the evocative, descriptive prose of James, but without a narrator, that's not a fault of the production. If you're new to James, these stories are entirely accessible. Good voice acting and direction, for the most part.

I loved this show when it was on Comedy Central, but thought that was all there would ever be. This new audiobook version picks up on the same theme. It translates well without visuals, but does require a little more explicitly stated exposition. Well done and fun to listen to.

Story
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

Perfect reading of a comfortable series of Christie shorts. The framing device doesn't fit perfectly, as a few collections were combined here, but it doesn't affect the individual stories. This is my audio comfort food.

Story
The inimitably witty David Rakoff, New York Times best-selling author of Don’t Get Too Comfortable, defends the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst, because you’ll never be disappointed. In this deeply funny (and, no kidding, wise and poignant) audiobook, Rakoff examines the realities of our sunny, gosh everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture and finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams won’t come true.

Story
Dan Savage’s mother wants him to get married. His boyfriend, Terry, says “no thanks” because he doesn’t want to act like a straight person. Their six-year-old son, D.J., says his two dads aren’t “allowed” to get married but that he’d like to come to the reception and eat cake. Throw into the mix Dan’s straight siblings, whose varied choices form a microcosm of how Americans are approaching marriage these days, and you get a rollicking family memoir that will have everyone - gay or straight, right or left, single or married - howling with laughter.
