Easy listen with some twists
Reviewed: 03-20-23
The story juggles multiple characters and a fast-paced plot. There are some twists that keep you guessing, and the ending was satisfying while also leaving open some interest for the next book. What makes this book unique is it’s an action plot but quite a bit of deep thinking is involved as well for the main character. It’s a thriller that doesn’t neglect the internal character arc for the external plot arc.
The narrator has a deep voice, and he didn’t do a high-pitch whine for females like some narrators try to do. Overall, a pleasant listen.

Story
Billy Jay Cader came from an abusive past. Self-preservation forced him to run away at the age of 14. His daddy was full of demons and played a sadistic game in a lottery-type punishment with his boy. When Billy Jay ran from his daddy, he hoped to outrun those demons as well. As time passed, he realized he hadn't been able to flee fast enough to escape them. Now those mental monsters were tightly nestled within. He was the new vessel to carry his daddy's wrath.

A Story of Horror and Faith
Reviewed: 07-09-21
This book is an interesting mixture of disturbing and redemption. It starts out a little slow with a bird’s eye view of the main character’s past, but it does get hard to put down in the middle. The ending seemed a little too easy, but the author uses that to set up nicely for the next book’s conflict. I’d recommend it for someone who wants a story of grace with grit.
The narrator has a nice low voice and seems to get into each character as he reads. The only time I felt jarred out of the story was when he did a particularly whinny version of a woman, but it only lasted for a scene. I thought he made a good narrator for this darker tale.

Story
My name is Drew Hayes, and for the past six years I've made my living as a writer. In that time, I've published 20 books, written hundreds of thousands of words, and made countless mistakes - most of which I like to think I've learned from. Underqualified Advice (and Other Amusing Diversions) is my attempt to compile those lessons and share them with others, as well as have some fun along the way. Half of the book is dedicated to detailing specifics about writing, maneuvering the industry, and keeping fiscally afloat in largely unstable waters.

Surprisingly Amazing

I purchased this book on a whim, and I do not regret it. I’ll segment this into two parts similar to how Drew wrote the book.
Underqualified Advice: U
For anyone interested in a writing career or just interested in how the process works, this is a solid must read book. Drew doesn’t tell you how to do your job, but he offers lots of wisdom other sources seem to skip as unimportant. He also does a great job at making sure you know this career is not glamorous but also uplifting you in your journey as a writer.
Amusing Diversions: D
While the amusing diversions seemed a bit over the top at the beginning, it did not take long for me to get used to the crazy stories and even crave to hear more of them. I found myself choosing to listen to this audiobook over other fiction books with a cohesive story that I was already reading at the time. It was also fun to get to know the man behind the book which made you respect the advice he was giving even more.
As for the narrator, Kirby did a magnificent job. He made the book feel like a fireside chat with Drew and was able to portray a wild yet compassionate author who just wanted to share his thoughts.
Overall, it’s a marvelous audiobook, and, if you are a Drew Hayes fan, it’s a must read just so you can get to know him a little better.
