Story
Sex, Time, and Power offers a tantalizing answer to an age-old question: Why did big-brained Homo sapiens suddenly emerge some 150,000 years ago? The key, according to Shlain, is female sexuality. Drawing on an awesome breadth of research, he shows how, long ago, the narrowness of the newly bipedal human female's pelvis and the increasing size of infants' heads precipitated a crisis for the species. Natural selection allowed for reconfiguration of hormonal cycles, entraining women with the periodicity of the moon - and imbuing women with the concept of time.

Interesting conjecture
Reviewed: 10-15-20
The author has some interesting conjectures about the impact of physiology, and overall does a pretty good job of trying to address the power balance between females and males of our species, Though he sincerely wishes to respect gyne-sapiens as he refers to females of our species, he also is stuck in some out of date thinking about gender roles and the behaviors of "males" vs "females". For example, he describes male penguins as some how unusual for minding the egg when the female has to go eat, because minding the egg is a female role. He seems oblivious to the fact that by attributing egg minding to a female role, he is applying human bias. It is no more odd that male penguins tend their eggs than sea horse males or some species of toads which tend their fertilized eggs - it is the result of evolution. But this is only one of many, many points where he is stuck in mid-20th century thinking. And this book is 20 years old, so I guess that it isn't surprising. (I would like Audible to show the publish dates with the title of a book.) While I find his conjecture on the impact of bipedalism on human relationships, I find the book overall to be too full of sweeping generalizations and assumptions. It is an interesting thought experiment, and worth discussing - but I hope you can read with a critical mindset so you can separate the wheat from the chaff. In all honesty, I can't even finish this book, because for me, the chaff built up a bit too much.

Story
Contrary to conventional wisdom, chronic disease is not genetically predetermined but results from a mismatch between our genes and environment and lifestyle. What we call a "disease" is the outcome of an imbalance in one or more of the seven core physiological processes. Leveraging a lifetime on the cutting edge of research and practice, Dr. Jeffrey S. Bland lays out a road map for good health by helping us understand these processes and the root causes of chronic illness.

really good story and performance but Blackout ends with a cliff-hanger. All Clear, the next book picks up where Blackout left off. I would have been mightily annoyed by this if I didn't happen to have an extra credit handy and could download the next book right away. I think it is worth getting both books - but I don't think you should have to find out about the second one when the first one just stops rather than ending....

Simon Prebble is an excellent performer, but the material is just not that interesting. And having sections in Italian or French, or German does not make it more worth listening to for me. While it does suggest a couple of different possibilities, it is just kind of dull. I didn't even make it into the 3rd story. Or,was it the second. Can't remember.

Story
In a crafty new novel featuring the world's greatest literary detective, Alan Vanneman extends the boundaries of the Sherlock Holmes canon with this novel. A late-night summons takes Holmes and Dr. Watson from the cozy Victorian comforts of Baker Street to the Orient Express, where they travel the breadth of Europe to exotic Constantinople. But danger's afoot, for death, too, is traveling first class.

Watson has sex
Reviewed: 03-22-13
I am not opposed to sex scenes in novels but this is supposed to be a Sherlock Holmes story, not Watson's lusty life. The authors detailed descriptions of the marginal and irrelevant does nothing to inspire listening even though the plot has some interest, it isnt enough to keep me. Though Mr Vance gives an excellent performance, this book is being returned.

Story
London 1899 and a matter of grave national importance. American impresario Florenz Adler, has rebuilt Shakespeare's Globe playhouse. The grand opening is to take place in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Amid the excitement, the actors receive sinister warnings in the form of cryptic quotations from Shakespeare's plays and a drawing of a rose. A hoax? A literary joke? But not for long - the joke turns sour as the murders begin, each an exact copy of a death in a Shakespeare play.

Annoying reading style, choppy. At points I wondered if performer was severely asthmatic. Too many comma insertions in the text. Too many modern anachronisms. Plot point based on something that didn't happen for 25years after the story timeline. Then, unforgivable to me, rehash of Conan Doyle plot points and phrases. Not homages, outright copy. Glad it was extra cheap on sale.

I never paid much attention to Rob Lowe until the West Wing, in which I thought he was remarkably good. I enjoyed him in Austin Powers and of course knew about the stupid sex tape - and was kind of iffy about this book - but the reviews talked me into it - and Im glad they did. It was an interesting story about an improbable life that turned into a really decent and friendly guy. No tabloid junk here, just matter of fact and personal. I recommend it for a pleasant listen.

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Absolutely excellent from first to last. Too engrossing to listen at bedtime - it wil keep you up. I'm a big fan of Holmes in many iterations - Larry Millett and Laurie King among others, but Anthony Horowitz really captures it all - the essence of a good Holmes story - plus excellent description of place, action and character - brought leaping to life by Derek Jacobi - truly a brilliant and lush performance. Even if you are not a Holmes fan - this is a great book. I'm pretty fussy and rarely, if ever, have given such an unabashed 5 star review. This one is sooooooo worth it.

Well written descriptions of irrelevant story of an implied intrigue. Holmes doesn't even appear until 2/3 of the way through. Missing the essential Holmes-Russell story telling. Missing any sense of real intrigue until chapter 34 or so. Read all the other Mary Russell books but skip this one. A long way down from the emotional depth of the last 3 books. Humor lies flat because the story is so often full of pointless detail, I found myself not caring much about any of the characters or the plot. Nope, skip this one.
