This is a lot of fun. Great character development, good story line and it takes its time developing characters without it dragging along. I highly recommend this book.

I hate leaving negative reviews but this book was just painful. The characters were superficial. They made painfully stupid decisions and the chairs they had to face were unrealistic. I will say that some of the prepper knowledge that was in the story was good. But not good enough to push through the book.

I couldn't finish the book.

Good story, but with painful parts

All in all a good story that I would recommend to a friend. But only with a disclaimer.

The characters are in many cases really dumb. I don't know if was the authors lack of imagination on realistic challenges or just an attempt to create drama but the constant mistakes made that even a 12 year old would have figured out caused some forehead rubbing.

Then there was the complete lack of understanding of military tactics. FYI if you are going to write a story that has a lot of military involvement in the story line get yourself a subject matter expert. Your special forces were using tactics that a cub scout would see through.

Other than those issues the story was enjoyable and I am looking forward to the next book. I just hope the author hires some experts to give the story line a dose of much needed reality.

Frustrated, what could have been amazing fell flat

I had such high hopes for this story but it just fell flat. Not because of the premise or the main story but because the author was completely ignorant of certain things that just made your brain itch when you come to the parts.

For example (no spoiler) at one point the mention a "bull steer". HUH??? The author obviously didn't know that a "bull" is a intact male cow where as a steer is a castrated male cow. And FYI using a steer to breed will produce less than seller results.

The book is chocked full of these types of examples and poor logic leaps. It is what ruined it for me.

But other than those types of mistakes I did enjoy the writing, the story and the performance. Just hire a fact checker or a subject matter expert.

What did you love best about After the EMP: Darkness?

Very cool with the three narrators. I enjoyed the storyline and I thought that they showed a believable scenario on what would happen the first couple of weeks into a disaster.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

What was frustrating is that the author should have spent some time speaking with marines. The mistakes that the dad made, made my brain itch.

Any additional comments?

Madison needed to be smacked. NO ONE is that stupid and naive. It made parts painful to listen too.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I really hate the main character hekat. She does not have a single redemeing quality tht makes me like her. She is full of hate, a user and doesn't respect a single character in the book. She is horrible.

I would show how she evolved as a person. Grows to discover the good things in men and women. To embrace all of the strengths and weaknesses of her social group and to leverage them. I am actually routing for the demons in this book because I want her to be taken out. This is just a bad character.

If you’ve listened to books by Karen Miller before, how does this one compare?

I've listen to almost all of the books Karen Miller has written and for the most part, I enjoy her work. This book was also well written with an interesting storyline and well developed characters. I just can't stand the main character. I will not be buying the next two books. That is the a very rare occurrence for me and a statement as to how bad this character is.

Which character – as performed by Josephine Bailey – was your favorite?

I like War Leader, the War Lord, Vodka, pretty much any character oer than the main character.

Did Empress inspire you to do anything?

Yes stop listening
