Story
Following its initial appearance in serial form, Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage was published as a complete work in 1895 and quickly became the benchmark for modern antiwar literature. In the character of Henry Flemming, Stephen Crane provides a great and realistic study of the mind of an inexperienced soldier trapped in the fury and turmoil of war. Flemming dashes into battle, at first tormented by fear, then bolstered with courage in time for the final confrontation.

So moving, and full of personality and color.
A magnificent narrator with a tremendously powerful narration of war, by a sensitive, richly talented author who had never experienced it.

What a marvelous story teller is Karen Abbot, I look forward to reading and listening to her other books (well researched and the story moves seamlessly). And Rob Shapiro is a wonderful narrator!!! (which means so much) Absolutely terrific. I have listened to this audio twice. Most enjoyable. Kudos to all.

Miss the B. Bryson narration
Reviewed: 11-03-18
The narrator does not have the charm of the author's voice. B. Bryson has a distinctive and delightful voice which brings his thoughts and adventures to life in a wonderfully droll manner. Although Osgood has a clear voice and is most probably a wonderful narrator for another book, for those of us who know Bill B's voice, it is a let down. Bryson come back to us!

James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Beautiful writing and a compelling narrative. Science, madness and a Presidency collide. Kudos to Candice Millard. I am going to read her first book as well - as this one, her second, was absolutely riveting. Also, the narrator, Paul Michael is TERRIFIC.

Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Thad convinced his girlfriend and another female accomplice, both NASA interns, to break into an impregnable laboratory at NASA - past security checkpoints, an electronically locked door with cipher security codes, and camera-lined hallways - and help him steal the most precious objects in the world: the moon rocks. But what does one do with an item so valuable that it’s illegal even to own?

Good Story; Terrible Reader
Reviewed: 07-01-15
What didn’t you like about Casey Affleck’s performance?
Terrible narration. Reader speaks in half tones like a teenager; has no breadth control and swallows the end of his sentences. Affleck should never be employed as a professional reader. His vocal limitations are a distraction from the story. Just because Affleck is in movies doesn't mean he has training. His narration was a real disservice to the book and the author.
