Great Beginning
Reviewed: 03-22-24
This was an excellent beginning to a story, but it feels more like Part 1 of a novel, rather than Book 1 of a series. Still, what is there is excellent and Steven Pacey of course knocks it out of the park.

Story
Everyone in the small town of Central City, Texas loves Lou Ford. A deputy sheriff, Lou's known to the small-time criminals, the real-estate entrepreneurs, and all of his coworkers - the low-lifes, the big-timers, and everyone in-between - as the nicest guy around. He may not be the brightest or the most interesting man in town, but nevertheless, he's the kind of officer you're happy to have keeping your streets safe. The sort of man you might even wish your daughter would end up with someday. But behind the platitudes and glad-handing lurks a monster the likes of which few have seen.

Good "Popcorn" Listen
Reviewed: 01-12-24
This is a good deal to use one credit for the entire trilogy. That said, it starts to drag after a while. Like a good "popcorn" movie, it is pretty good for listening to over a long commute or something. It gets a little YA for my tastes though. It is definitely better than anything written by, say, N K Jemisen. However, I think Babel would be a better place to start for a new reader. It was a lot better (though still had a bit of that YA flavor).

Don't Let The Astrology Dissuade You
Reviewed: 01-12-24
I was a bit worried when I began this book that the astrology content would be (for me) boring, obtuse, and distracting. In fact, there is really nothing of it on the surface of the story. Rather, this is a book full of enjoyable characters and a lot of mystery. Some of the narrative jumping around in time gets a bit hard to follow at parts, at least while listening rather than following on a printed page. However, with so many characters and so much going on it is pretty remarkable how easy most of the story is to follow. Overall, it feels like the great novels of the 19th century with better pacing. My book group and I loved it to the point that we (for the first time) decided to follow this book immediately with another by the same author.

The Blithedale Romance (1852) by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a dark romantic novel set in the farming commune of Blithedale where some utopian city slickers have gathered in order to improve the world. The narrator, Miles Coverdale, gets acquainted with the reformer Hollingsworth, the feminist Zenobia, her sister Priscilla, her father Old Moodie, and Professor Westervelt. They pursue their individual egotistical paths and get entangled in their conflicting ambitions.

Not great story, worse performance
Reviewed: 12-29-22
The story was alright at first but I really wanted it to be a critique/satire of the narrator and his annoying friends. It started to feel that way at times and then collapsed into boring melodrama, then I gave up. I probably could have made it through the story still but the voice performance was pretty bad (and I thought that this actor's was the best out of the three versions I could find on Audible). He would do this inflection with his voice to, I don't know, add drama or something, and then resolve on this cheery note. Doesn't sound too bad but he does it constantly. Every. Single. Sentence.

I enjoyed this one well enough, but the first book is still the best. I'm not super into the "political" stuff in this one, but there is some good world building and character development. it's always worth it for Michael Page anyway.

Story
Fantasy, love and an exuberant celebration of English life and literature, Orlando is a uniquely entertaining story. Originally conceived by Virginia Woolf as a playful tribute to the family of her friend and lover, Vita Sackville-West, Orlando's central character, a fictional embodiment of Sackville-West, changes sex from a man to a woman and lives throughout the centuries, whilst meeting historical figures of English literature.
