Too much meandering prose with half-baked philosophical commentary that seemed like filler, not connected in a meaningful way to the actual story. Not sure that author was well-served by also being the audiobook narrator.

It's sort of a jazzed up radio play of Oliver Twist. I like multiple voice audiobooks, but this was a bit over-produced. The music featured a strange bass line. There were some interesting audio separation effects, but they didn't contribute much. If you want some good Dickens, I much preferred Richard Armitage's reading of David Copperfield, also on Audible.

First, listen to the outstanding
narration of David Copperfield by Richard Armitage. Then this outstanding novel makes an even better listen.

Just because the word "f__k" is in common usage now doesn't mean it was during the 1940's and 50's. Don't be lazy. Use language that actually portrays a period. You wouldn't put a Tesla in a film portraying the 1960's.

On walks and drives during weeks of covid, I was privileged to hear Richard Armitage perform the unabridged “David Copperfield.” Armitage captures the characters superbly, each with a distinctive voice and manner.
It is by no means a quick read, and so much the better for it. This is one of the very best Audible productions I have listened to, ranking up there with the very different but equally impressive Audible production of “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders.

Along with the recording of Lincoln in the Bardo, The Sandman seems to be a new form, with a large number of voices (60 some in Sandman’s case, even more in Bardo), a serious musical score, and very high production values. This is old time radio theater at a whole new level.
Highly recommend it and Bardo.

This audiobook was unlike any I had listened to before. It was more like a recorded play, with a large array of readers, many well-known actors. The text lent itself to this treatment. I enjoyed it.
