Not having a background in any sort of philosophy, much of this title was way over my head and not a title for beginners!!! I'll have to go over it again or at least review some of the chapters again. But it definitely gave me food for thought and some helpful tips.

Over the pandemic I've discovered how essential critical thinking is. I've kept a list of highly qualified persons who've made dangerous and false statements about SARS-COV2. Over 70 of them (including the once director of the CDC). But thankfully I've found some who seem to be authentic and stand up to scrutiny. We've got to be careful out there!

Almost from the first words I've found myself filled with tears. Not just information about the disease but embracing history, sociology, colonialism, racism, and injustice. So many painful accounts of individual patients and yet signs of hope. I think I've been changed!!!

I've learned a lot from Pakman and been challenged by his support for incrementalism. Yet, as a Brit, I'm confused by his support fot Manchin whom he describes as a 'moderate' while I perceive him more as a radical right winger with a Democrat label meaning nothing in the real world.

So grateful for stories from the past which can inspire responses today. And how social understanding can have huge effects on health outcomes.

I was hoping for simple solutions and explanations. I was disappointed with both. Hence it's a far bigger problem than I had perceived! Quite an eye opener. Helpful to learn that it's a very old problem but infinitely more complicated by developing technologies! God help us!

I've never been known for my excellent use of English! Even 60 years ago my school performance led to deep surprise resulting in my headmaster grasping me by the hand in the middle of August on the high street with the words "Newcomb; you passed English Language O Level!!!"

So I've surprised myself by picking up Anne Curzan's book to learn/hear more about my language of birth. Being more inclined toward mathematics and sciences my tendency is to fall back on 'rules' which would satisfy my inner 'grammando' rather than tolerate the flexibility of my 'wordie'.

But my eyes have been opened by Ms Curzan. I see how our language has changed down the years and sometimes done complete somersaults! Even right now, many current usage guides and dictionaries often do NOT share common understandings. Not only that, but their perspectives change over the years and between editions. As such, I've found the book quite a witty scrutiny of our usage. I need to relax a bit on my inner insistence on following rules.

My disappointment comes from recognising that I'll forget/have already forgotten, too much of her advice!

A great read!!!
