Story
The universe is hungry. For power. For money. For war. And—revenge. Stripping osmium from across the stars, thieves will stop at nothing to fuel the nightmarish industry of Stolen Persons, their souls locked away in chips made of the rarest metal known. Among these thieves is Helum Gauss, the visionary criminal whose empire spans a hundred worlds. But his massive corporation, BeneStar, lost—badly—to Van and the Guild, and Gauss won’t take no for an answer.

The bloopers at the end! The other bits were pretty good too. Am I done yet Ethel?

Don’t waste a credit. The rave reviews are suspiciously similar and vacuous as is the story.

The performance was pretty good but the story wouldn’t have made it into Analog or Galaxy magazines back in the day. The story is juvenile and there is no drama or sense of excitement because the next dreadful moment was apparent two pages before it occurred.

Story
Visionary space industrialist Dan Randolph is dead, but his protege, pilot Pancho Barnes, now sits on the board of his conglomerate. She has her work cut out for her, for Randolph's rival, Martin Humphries, still wants to control Astro and still wants to drive independent asteroid miners like Lars Fuchs out of business. Humphries wants revenge against Pancho, and, most of all, he wants his old flame, Amanda, who has become Lars Fuchs's wife.

Fractured narration detracts from plodding story.

I regret the purchase of this audio book, the story is okay but the randomly timed variation of narrators with widely varying accents for the few main characters truly sucks. Farming the novel out to many narrators no doubt got the product to market quicker, but the product sucks, I got as many Grand Tour series titles on sale as I could, saving several credits but without knowing several of the books were being read by a committee. I wouldn't have bought the asteroid series audiobooks, I would have gotten the ebooks instead because the mixed narrative wrecks it for me.

Once, Dan Randolph was one of the richest men on Earth. Now the planet is spiraling into environmental disaster, with floods and earthquakes destroying the lives of millions. Martin Humphries, fabulously wealthy heir of the Humphries Trust, also knows that space-based industry is the way of the future. But unlike Randolph, he does not care if Earth perishes in the process.

Random transition between narrators was reminiscent of a poorly choreographed pro wrestling tag team match, with random bits of music/sound effects thrown in for distraction. The story was okay, but like much of Bova, very slow and plodding. Never say in two chapters what you can stretch out into eight hours of descriptive narrative which advances neither the plot nor the characters.
