A routine sentry mission discovers a human colony where only bones remain, and the hostiles are nowhere to be found. Days later a fusion bomb devastates the defending forces on the desert planet Squire. Hordes of the insectoid Kadan flood the planet with the technology of the ancient Emflife. They advance to crush the human lines but stop just short of victory. Colonel Cole Clarke and his battalion of convicts must discover what the Kadan are really doing.

Not much of a back story so it's hard to follow the political intrigues and motivations but the armoured combat scenes were engrossing

Great story. Would have probably enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the series multiple times on paperback, but I wonder if I hadn't been familiar with the story, would I have been able to follow the characters' motivations and actions. Knowing all the parts that this abridged version cut left me wondering why they bothered

the series is stills entertaining, however if they stay along the cloak and dagger line and away from military sci-fi ( the reason I picked up this series) thet may lose me
