One of the most original fantasy novel series
Reviewed: 04-02-21
This is one of the most original fantasy novel series that I have ever hear/read. The characters are so rich and fully realized and there aren't many cliches among them. The characters are made even more alive by Steven Pacey's transportive performances. Truly one of the best most captivating performers in audio books.
Luckily he also did the other First Law Books which I will be checking out next!

Story
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck. Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

A Great Story with Plenty of Action and Laughs
Reviewed: 03-02-21
This book was not only a great adventure, but it was hilarious. The writer has a dark sense of humor, and he peppers in moments of levity to offset the acts of violence. Usually I don't laugh as hard when reading or listening to fantasy books, but this book had me laughing with tears in my eyes. The writing is also well complimented by the narrator who does a great job of acting each scene and adding more to it - a true one man show.

Simon is such a hard character to love...
Reviewed: 02-11-21
Pubescent, cries alot, and one of the least endearing characters I have read in a while, and you have to follow him throughout the whole book? I was 10 hours into the book and waiting for the turn to see the character grow and maybe even become an interesting character, but he just did not do for me. About 9 hours in, you get introduced to probably the most interesting character in the book ( Binabik), but even that is not enough to want me to keep going on. 10 hours in it feels like I am literally hiking towards Mount Doom, to drop off the ring and you are just seeing a slog rather than experiencing an adventure. Too bad...I heard good things about this book, but I think if I don't sucked in after 10 hours, it's not for me.

Story
In the four previous books of his epic fantasy series Winds of the Forelands, David Coe has woven a complex tapestry of magic and politics, courage and betrayal, love and hate. Now, he brings the many strands of this enthralling series together in a climactic novel that will thrill readers of epic magical fantasy. For years the magical Qirsi people who live among the Eandi courts of the Forelands have conspired, weakening alliances among the realms. The renegades are led by a mysterious Weaver named Dusaan with powers that allow him to appear in the dreams of his followers and to bind the magic of many Qirsi into a single weapon more potent than any the Eandi have faced in a thousand years.

Where is Alpha?
Reviewed: 02-03-21
The story was a great conclusion to a 5 part epic, but why did they change the narrator for book 5? The original narrator for books 1~4 was so good and actually gave each character some personality with his voice. I had a hard time following along this book because the new narrator pronounced the names from.the first four books differently, and all of his male and female voices sounded the same so it was hard to keep track of who was who. You can tell the narrator did not care of what was done in the first 4 books and did whatever he wanted.

Story
For nine hundred years the Forelands knew peace, but unrest among the magical Qirsi people has blossomed into a conspiracy against the Eandi rulers. What started with an occasional "accidental" death of a lord has exploded into violence, rending the fabric of Forelands society. Led by a mysterious Qirsi "Weaver" with powers that can reach into the minds of others even in their sleep, the rebellion is now turning Qirsi against Qirsi, as it weakens alliances among the Eandi.

Better than 2nd Book, but Not as Good as 1st
Reviewed: 01-18-21
Books 2 and 3 should have shortened and combined. I feel like there was a great story here, but the extra fluff of the 2nd book made it a little slow.
Much better than the 2nd book, but not as good as the 1st one. Unlike the 2nd book, this one felt like there was some resolution.

The realms of the Forelands are in turmoil as a result of the machinations of a powerful conspiracy of sorcerers, members of a race called the Qirsi, pale-skinned folk feared by those in power. Though many refuse to acknowledge the possibility of a conspiracy, a handful of Qirsi and nobles realize that the time has come to take action, even at the cost of their loves, their honor, and even their lives.

Felt like a build up book than an actual sequel
Reviewed: 01-12-21
Alot was going on this book that seemed to be more set up than the first. The first book actually had a resolution of a smaller problem with the looming unresolved big problem. This book felt like it kept on addressing the big looming conspiracy without getting much resolved. I wished it had also focused more on the characters that I fell in love with in the first book, but this book introduced quite a few new characters and I didn't care much about them except for like 1 or 2 by the end of the book. Hopefully the 3rd one will be better.

A Great Fantasy Adventure
Reviewed: 01-07-21
Although it is a bit linear, there are alot of great characters and some incredible moments. The predicaments that you find Richard, the progatagonist, in are great set pieces. Some of the villains in the book are truly diabolical and the levels of sadism the villains partake are some of the most grotesque I have read. The writer is definitely good at making you feel icky around the villains and hopeful around the heroes with his descriptive storytelling.

After a Qirsi traitor betrayed his race to save himself, the Qirsi were defeated and dispersed among the seven realms of the Forelands. Those specially endowed Qirsi capable of multiple powers, the Weavers, were all put to death.
