Story
Maren Yearly is a young woman who wants the same things we all do. She wants to be someone people admire and respect. She wants to be loved. But her secret, shameful needs have forced her into exile. She hates herself for the bad thing she does, for what it's done to her family and her sense of identity; for how it dictates her place in the world and how people see her - how they judge her. She didn't choose to be this way.

It’s perfect. Great plot, characters, and ending. Loved all the 90s references and how vividly they painted the scenes.

Gag
Reviewed: 09-20-24
The whole series can be summed up by - powerful boy and powerful girl meet and fall in love and sacrifice all for “a better world” aka semi democracy? I can’t count how many times I wanted to gag in the romance story lines. Every terrible thing is narrowly averted by random magical plans that came from no where… it’s just one over blown crisis after another for far too many hours for the small amount of actual plot. Heteronormative Disney princess toxic masculinity glorifying sacrifice for your country bullshit. Wish I hadn’t listened to the whole series. If you’re into that it’s probably fine. If you’re not, get ready to gag over and over. Also, the author basically can only produces two characters and just does the same people over and over and just gives them different powers to differentiate. I’m

Torture and war…the end
Reviewed: 05-07-23
Why bother. It’s all violence and no plot. The length of series you would think they’re would be something other than gruesome descriptions of torture and death.

I'm so grateful that this book exist in audio format. The book is very dense and academically challenging at times. Being able to listen while following along with the text was extremely helpful. The content of this book has changed how I view almost everything relational. The performance was difficult to follow at times due to odd pauses in the sentences. However, I grew accustomed to the reader over time. I wish Dan Siegel would record this book in his own voice. Highly recommend this book!
