Story
What if the longing we feel is a sign of God’s longing for us? Thirsting is a deeply spiritual exploration of a life-changing truth: only when we learn to live in the ache of our thirst instead of running from it will we know the joy of receiving God in every part of our lives. We may be able to imagine God saving us, using us, and even loving us—but wanting us? Pursuing us? Longing for us? And yet, as spiritual director Strahan Coleman teaches, God’s greatest desire is to commune with us in the depths of our souls.

Read this book if you long to know God more. I think this may be especially helpful to those who have struggled snd suffered in Pentecostal and hyper-charismatic cultures.

How the Bible Actually Works makes clear that there is no one right way to read or listen to the Bible. Moving us beyond the damaging idea that “being right” is the most important measure of faith, Enns’ freeing approach to Bible study helps us to instead focus on pursuing enlightenment and building our relationship with God - which is exactly what the Bible was designed to do.

The word to the wise
Reviewed: 07-20-23
This should be required reading for Bible/reading Christians. Enns has made plain a truly helpful paradigm for understanding the Bible. The Bible is wisdom literature and it takes wisdom to discern how (or if/when) it still speaks to us in particular matters.
Also, I’m glad Enns narrated the book himself—this ensures that his characteristic humor/snake shines through!

Story
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Story
The great fourth-century church father Basil of Caesarea once observed that, in his time, most Christians believed that hell was not everlasting, and that all would eventually attain salvation. But today, this view is no longer prevalent within Christian communities. In this momentous book, David Bentley Hart makes the case that nearly two millennia of dogmatic tradition have misled readers on the crucial matter of universal salvation.

Irrefutable theological, Biblical, philosophical, & moral reasoning that dismantles the “traditional” (NOT ancient) view of eternal conscious torment in Hell. Thank God for gifting DBH with capacity to lay out plainly reasoned argumentation that so much of the Church needs to comprehend. The Gospel is truly Good News and this book will help any “deconstructing” Christian to see it more clearly.

Story
The scriptures are an essential aspect of the Christian faith. But we have often equated them with the living Word himself, even elevating them above the One to whom they point. In doing so, we have distorted their central message - and our view of God. Tragically, this has caused multitudes of people unnecessary doubt, confusion, and pain in their encounters with the scriptures.

Incredibly important book for the faithful (& would-be believers) during our era of faith deconstruction
Reviewed: 09-17-22
This book and it’s precursor, A More Christlike God, have sparked a revival in my heart and home. To fully know that “God is love plus nothing” and to have a historical, faithful and intellectually satisfying foundation to assert this “too good to be true” creed is life-giving! 🙌🏼
The God revealed in Jesus is amazing, and the scriptures that testify to the One who is the Word of God are still a gift when understood properly.
Thank you Dr. Brad Jersak for the soul-searching and scholarship that have produced these works. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Additionally, the narrator who recorded this audio book is the best one on all of Brad Jersak’s works so far. If it’s possible, I would have him re-record all previous works available on audible as (unless of course, Brad would be willing to narrate the audiobooks himself.)

Story
We are surrounded by toxic stories and bad cultural thinking. We’re held back by incomplete theology. But does it have to be like that? Is frustration the end of the story? In the face of confusion and injustice, we can lose sight of our true narrative - the one that started in a garden and wants to make our real lives better today. Activist and recording artist Sho Baraka wrestles deeply and honestly with these questions, gives you permission to do the same, and shows a hard-earned path to creative change. With Sho, you’ll engage with art, justice, and history.

Vital read for any student of the Bible
Reviewed: 01-19-21
Book Review:
Esau McCaulley’s work in “Reading While Black” is a VITAL theological work for American Christians! The part on Jesus’ exegetical method (demonstrated in Matthew 19:8) was worth the price of the book alone!
If you’ve ever felt disturbed by passages in Scripture that seem to condone slavery—good! But now please read this work and see how a better hermeneutic and acknowledgement of the clearly revealed heart of God should’ve prevented faithful Bible readers from ever permitted such a heinous sin in Western civilization.
The Biblical arguments around police reform & civil disobedience need to be heard in our era of BLM activism.
I will be buying a physical copy of this book to reread and better internalize the Biblical reasoning.
Performance Review:
My only critique is for the EDITING of the audio recording. I LOVE that the author has read it himself- he best knows how to convey the meaning of his text. But every chapter has multiple moments where words or even phrases are repeated. Clearly the author/narrator was deciding how to best voice the text but his takes weren’t cut out. ,An editor should have review the whole recording and removed the repetitions.

Why does true Christian transformation seem fleeting? And why does church often feel lonely, Christian community shallow, and leaders untrustworthy? For many Christians, the delight of encountering Christ eventually dwindles - and disappointment sets in. Is lasting joy possible? These are some of the questions Michel Hendricks has considered both in his experience as a spiritual formation pastor and in his lifetime as a Christian.

Story
Whether our notions of "God" are personal projections or inherited traditions, author and theologian Brad Jersak proposes a radical reassessment, arguing for a more Christlike God and a more beautiful Gospel. A More Christlike God suggests that such a God would be very good news indeed - a God who Jesus "unwrathed" from dead religion, a love that is always toward us, and a grace that pours into this suffering world through willing, human partners.

Christian, read this book! See that God is as good & loving as Jesus!
Reviewed: 12-29-20
This book is an invitation to a needed paradigm shift—a beautiful Gospel! There is hope & healing in this Biblical exposition that many brothers & sisters need to get deep into their souls.
I’ve known ex-Christians who resonated with Jesus but, after years of struggling to synthesize Jesus with a poorly preached picture of God, abandoned their faith. They rightly couldn’t make sense of the bipolar, vindictive & even abusive doctrine that so much of the Western Church has celebrated as “truth.” But if Hebrews 1:3 is right, then God is exactly like Jesus!! This is truly Good News! Read this book and rejoice in the God who is love and proved it in Jesus!
