Returned it after several chapters

I've read a lot of litRPGs. Some with heroes, done antiheroes, some with villains. Many do awful things to survive or protect the people they care about. I'm not above violence or dark themes at all.

This protagonist... with no necessity at all, within the first 2 chapters is offered a stick to beat a young woman. For no reason other than his own enjoyment. Not only does he accept (under zero duress) but discovers while doing so that he's loving it, having fun hitting this child, and is getting skill points so he just keeps beating her while laughing with glee. He's loving this.

Carl and Donut would never. Jason Asano would never.

Several chapters later, I'm still finding nothing particularly redeeming about him, or fun, or clever, or even fully dark and evil. You're supposed to like this guy? I'm meant to root for this ass? And right off the bat, the into tells me he's going to be ruler of this entire kingdom eventually? Hard pass on this guy as king.

On top of that, the writing felt stilted, and dialogue awkward. Like, the guy apparently woke up in this new world and YOU DON'T EVEN GET TO SEE THAT HAPPEN. It cuts straight to him saying "Yeah so I had woken up in this world, and then some lady found me and explained it all to me and here I am now being offered a stick to beat this kid with, and I'm loving it. Wait, now I'm a farmer? This is awful, poor me!"

I gave it a good maybe 4 chapters. I returned the book. I've literally never returned a title before. I have no idea what the hype for this book is about.

Maybe it got better. But I sure wasn't going to find out.

Good but losing focus

The narrator did a wonderful job, but the audio quality was lower than in the previous recordings, and varied in tone and quality inn sudden and distracting jumps.

The story was fine, a continuation, more of the same. But it begins to feel a little unfocused and you get fewer and fewer endearing moments with the main characters. I started to feel my mind wandering a bit occasionally, which did not happen in the previous books.
Still, it's fun, enjoyable tactical magical combat adventures and that's really what brought us through the first books!

Classic sci-fi British comedy, round 2

Obviously I love this book. It's book 2 of one of the best sci-fi or comedy books of all time. It's amazing. It's a classic. It's a riot.
But... the narration is a little dry. I love Martin Freeman but somehow his read is dry in the wrong way. And his Zaphod voice is for some reason an annoying Boston accent, and I find it really grating. I am left wishing it was more British, which is something I didn't think would be possible for a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book would ever need. I wish Stephen Fry had narrated the rest of the series.

Narration = perfect glib Brit. I couldn't have picked a better narrator. He reminds me of the BBC tv adaptation in the very best way. I only wish the rest of the books in the series had the same narrator.
Story = also perfectly glib.
But you knew that. This is a classic of sci-fi, comedy, and social commentary.

Fun, meticulous, intelligent, irreverent and action packed. The narrator does a wonderful job bringing to live enjoyable characters. This is a much better crafted tale than I anticipated.

I love all of the Discworld novels, but to be honest the Witches novels are my least favorite story line. But I still enjoyed listening to it being performed. The reading is great, but the sound quality itself is fairly poor.

I already knew I loved this book. I've read every Discworld novel, and always enjoy the humor, wit, and subtle poignancy of the tales Sir Pratchett crafts. But this narration adds another layer of enjoyment to an already wonderful book. Each character's voice has carefully performed individuality, with the added joy of amusing regional accents and affectations. This might be the crowning jewel of Briggs' narrations, and is not to be missed. Enjoy!
